APS launches academy to boost fire safety and competence
New learning hub for building and fire safety professionals
The Association for Project Safety (APS) has launched a new knowledge academy to strengthen professional competence in health and safety and building safety risk management.
According to APS, the initiative establishes a dedicated learning and development hub designed to support continuous improvement across the built environment.
The APS Academy begins operations with an initial series of three specialist courses for Construction Design and Management (CDM) practitioners.
Courses cover fire safety, temporary works and building regulations
APS confirmed that the first three courses address priority skill areas for CDM duty-holders.
The programmes include Fire Safety in the CDM Pre-Construction Phase (England), Temporary Works for CDM Practitioners and Building Regulations (England).
Each course features a timed assessment and certificate and has been peer-reviewed by APS Fellows.
The organisation said that all courses are developed and delivered by industry experts and award membership points to non-members.
APS CEO highlights focus on competence and confidence
Andrew Leslie, Chief Executive Officer at APS, said: “The launch of the APS Academy marks a key milestone in supporting professionals across the sector.
“It is essential that APS provides accessible, robust learning.
“The new learning hub ensures duty-holders and design professionals are not only compliant, but also confident, capable, and delivering leadership in Building Safety.”
Supporting competence requirements under amended regulations
APS said that the Academy aligns with its wider strategy to enhance member support and reinforce professional standards.
The organisation added that CDM regulations have long included competence requirements for duty-holders, but these have become increasingly important following the amended Building Regulations 2010 (England).
APS noted that the updated regulations have created greater accountability for those carrying out design and building work.
Further details on the APS Academy are available via the organisation’s website.
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
The APS Academy provides structured learning for professionals working on construction projects where fire safety and regulatory compliance are key considerations.
The Fire Safety in the CDM Pre-Construction Phase (England) course is directly relevant to fire engineers, architects and design consultants who are responsible for ensuring safe building design.
Building control officers and safety managers involved in design coordination or contractor oversight can use the training to verify competence under the amended Building Regulations 2010 (England).
Temporary Works for CDM Practitioners supports those managing short-term installations and structures, which are often high-risk environments requiring strong safety planning.
Together, the new APS Academy courses form part of the wider shift toward verified competence and accountable practice in building safety management.
