A bill that would see families of first responders killed in action receive a one off payment of $50,000 has moved a step closer.

The Nebraska bill, first introduced by Senator Matt Hansen has moved to the final stage after it was approved by Senator Michael Flood.

Should the bill pass the final stage, it would mean that families would be eligible to apply for compensation within the first year of the death of their family member.

A bill that is already active includes payments for families of fallen police officers, firefighters and public ambulance service members.
