A team of 27 UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) experts have been deployed to Malawi through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Among them are two members of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service; Station Commander Darren Cleaves and Crew Manager Tristan Bowen.

The team are supporting search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy, which has now become the longest-lasting tropical storm on record. Operating in Bangula, Malawi, the team are involved in the flood response and have successfully rescued a total of 167 individuals today (20 March 2023).

Severe flooding and landslides caused by Cyclone Freddy have resulted in extensive damage across Malawi. More than 350,000 people have been displaced and at least 40,000 houses have been damaged, as well as schools, hospitals and roads.
