British Safety Council joins Battery Breakdown campaign

The British Safety Council announced its participation in the Battery Breakdown campaign, a safety initiative run by Electrical Safety First, with support from Matt Humby, Senior Technical Consultant at Firechief Global.

The campaign aims to address safety concerns related to lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters, focusing on raising awareness about risks associated with improper handling and storage of these batteries.

According to the British Safety Council, the rise in fires and incidents related to e-batteries has prompted an urgent need for public awareness and workplace guidance.

Phil Pinnington, Head of Audit and Consultancy at British Safety Council, expressed the importance of this campaign, highlighting the challenges posed by e-bikes and e-scooters in workplace environments.

Pinnington said: “As with all new and developing technologies, the increasing use of e-bikes and scooters has prompted a wave of new questions, considerations, and challenges – not least for employers, as e-bikes and scooters have entered the workplace; and are routinely charged at (or under) our desks.”

New podcast series tackles health and safety issues

In addition to supporting the Battery Breakdown campaign, the British Safety Council has launched a new podcast series, Health and Safety Uncut, with its first episode addressing lithium-ion battery safety.

Hosted by Dr Shaun Davis, Group Director of Safety, Health and Wellbeing at Belron International, the podcast series features discussions with industry experts on various topics.

Episode one, featuring Matt Humby, explores the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, offering listeners practical advice on mitigating fire risks.

Paul Fakley, Engagement Director at British Safety Council, described the podcast as a way to explore pressing health and safety topics: “Health and Safety Uncut is a great way to get under the skin of health, safety and wellbeing issues.

“Whether you’re looking for new insights and information from experts and specialists, want to broaden your knowledge, or simply hear something new and engaging about health, safety and wellbeing issues, this podcast is for you.”

Future podcast topics include workplace health and safety challenges

Future episodes of Health and Safety Uncut are set to explore a range of topics relevant to the modern workplace, including neurodiversity, musculoskeletal disorder prevention, and managing workplace risks associated with drugs and alcohol.

The series aims to provide listeners with insight from field experts and will cover various challenges that impact workers’ health and safety.

The podcast will release new episodes on the first Monday of each month.

Listeners can access Health and Safety Uncut on Spotify, where each episode delves into topics critical for employers and safety professionals to consider in light of current trends.

British Safety Council resources for e-battery management

To complement its podcast and campaign support, the British Safety Council offers resources to assist employers in managing lithium-ion batteries safely in the workplace.

Available through the Council’s website, these resources provide guidance on best practices for storage, charging, and handling of e-batteries.

This initiative aligns with the Council’s commitment to workplace safety, particularly as e-bikes and e-scooters become more common in both residential and professional settings.

The British Safety Council emphasises that their work with Electrical Safety First and other partners aims to create practical, enforceable guidelines to protect users of e-bikes and e-scooters, especially within indoor environments.
