PSBTA launches Catching Wildfire podcast on emerging wildfire technologies

Series explores innovations in wildfire detection and response

The Public Safety Broadband Technology Association (PSBTA) has announced the launch of its new podcast, Catching Wildfire: Emerging Technologies and Operational Innovations in Wildfire.

The series is hosted by Jeff Johnson, Chief Emeritus at the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA), and Chief Kim Zagaris, Wildfire Policy and Technology Advisor for the WFCA.

According to PSBTA, Catching Wildfire examines how emerging technologies are influencing wildfire detection, management and response across the United States.

The launch comes at a time when wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity, particularly in the western regions of the country.

Chiefs highlight technology’s role in wildfire management

Chief Jeff Johnson said: “The world of wildfire response is evolving rapidly.

“This podcast is about sharing the real tools, tactics, and people making a difference on the ground every day.

Chief Kim Zagaris added: “We’re giving listeners a front-row seat to the future of wildfire operations.

“From high-powered equipment to advanced analytics, we’re unpacking it all. Stay tuned and join us as we explore how emerging tech is catching wildfire.”

Podcast linked to FirstNet reauthorisation campaign

The PSBTA said the podcast launch coincides with calls from public safety leaders for Congress to reauthorise FirstNet, the nationwide broadband network dedicated to first responders.

FirstNet currently provides the connectivity and data capabilities needed to coordinate large-scale disaster responses, including wildfire operations.

Without reauthorisation, PSBTA warned that continued investment in life-saving communications technologies could be at risk.

Chief Johnson continued: “FirstNet isn’t just a network. It is a critical platform that supports the safety of our communities and the effectiveness of our responders.”

PSBTA is encouraging members of the public and industry stakeholders to sign its petition supporting the reauthorisation of the FirstNet Authority.

Episodes feature first-hand operational insights

The PSBTA confirmed that the Catching Wildfire podcast will be available across all major streaming platforms.

Each episode will feature interviews with public safety professionals, technologists and field experts discussing wildfire innovations and real-world applications.

Upcoming topics include Chinook helicopters conducting night-time firefighting, AI-powered fire watch cameras replacing manual lookout towers, Genasys community evacuation technology, High-Power User Equipment (HPUE) for enhanced connectivity, and satellite-based wildfire detection systems.

The podcast is produced in partnership with FirstNet and aims to educate listeners on how new technologies are supporting safer and more efficient responses to large-scale wildfires.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

The Catching Wildfire podcast highlights how communications, data and detection technologies are shaping modern wildfire response.

For fire chiefs, emergency managers and communications officers, the series offers practical insight into how connected platforms such as FirstNet are enabling real-time coordination across large operational areas.

Wildfire specialists, aviation units and incident commanders may also find value in the discussion of AI detection systems, aerial support strategies and deployable communications tools.

The podcast’s emphasis on technology integration aligns with current priorities in interoperability, situational awareness and network reliability within public safety operations.
