Texas Highway receives AFVC notation for firefighting measures
As reported by ClassNK, the car carrier Texas Highway, operated by “K” Line, has been granted an Additional Fire-Fighting Measures for Vehicle Carrier (AFVC) notation.
The vessel, designed for transporting electric vehicles (EVs), has been equipped with enhanced firefighting systems to address potential EV fire hazards, which can be challenging to extinguish and may reignite.
To support shipping companies in managing these risks, ClassNK has introduced the ‘Guidelines for the Safe Transportation of Electric Vehicles’.
These guidelines highlight the unique characteristics of EV fires and provide measures for effective response.
ClassNK offers five types of AFVC notations, with the Texas Highway receiving the FF (Fire Fighting) classification.
Fire safety features of Texas Highway
ClassNK’s inspection of the Texas Highway determined that the vessel met all the criteria necessary for the FF notation.
The carrier’s fire suppression manual includes comprehensive instructions on handling EV fires on board.
This ensures that crew members are well-prepared to manage potential fire emergencies involving EVs, improving overall safety.
In addition to having the necessary operational procedures, the Texas Highway is equipped with all essential firefighting tools and systems required for suppressing EV-related fires.
This equipment plays a key role in ensuring that firefighting efforts can be conducted swiftly and efficiently.
ClassNK guidelines for EV transportation safety
The increasing number of electric vehicles being transported by sea has raised concerns about fire safety due to the unique challenges EV fires pose.
ClassNK’s ‘Guidelines for the Safe Transportation of Electric Vehicles’ aim to assist shipping companies in mitigating these risks.
The guidelines provide detailed information on EV fire characteristics and outline best practices for ship operators to manage EV fire risks effectively.
The AFVC notations, including the one awarded to the Texas Highway, are part of ClassNK’s commitment to ensuring that vessels transporting EVs are equipped with adequate safety measures.
Ongoing commitment to safety in EV transportation
ClassNK remains dedicated to contributing to the safety of electric vehicle transportation by continuously developing and applying appropriate safety standards.
The organisation’s efforts to evaluate and certify ships, such as the Texas Highway, aim to support the industry as it adapts to the growing prevalence of EVs.
Through the implementation of AFVC notations, ClassNK continues to enhance fire safety standards, providing shipping companies with the necessary guidance and evaluation to maintain safe operations while transporting electric vehicles.
ClassNK issues AFVC notations to Texas Highway for electric vehicle fire safety: Summary
ClassNK has awarded the Texas Highway, a car carrier operated by “K” Line, the AFVC notation for its enhanced firefighting measures.
This classification is part of ClassNK’s efforts to ensure the safe transportation of electric vehicles (EVs), which pose unique fire risks.
The ship’s firefighting manual was assessed, confirming that it includes essential information on handling EV fires.
The necessary firefighting equipment is also available on board, enabling rapid and effective response.
This certification aligns with ClassNK’s guidelines for EV transportation safety, which aim to address the challenges posed by EV fires during maritime transport.
