More than half of UK consumers unaware of PFAS chemicals

A new report from fire trade supplier CheckFire highlights a gap in public awareness of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals.”

The report, based on a survey of 2,001 UK consumers conducted by Censuswide, found that 56% of respondents had never heard of PFAS.

Awareness was particularly low among those over 55, with 70% unfamiliar with the substances.

Once informed of the potential environmental and health risks, concern among consumers increased to 68%.

Over a quarter of respondents (27%) reported being extremely concerned about PFAS exposure.

Consumer demand for PFAS-free alternatives grows

The study found that 79% of consumers would switch to PFAS-free products, even at a higher cost.

Nearly one in ten respondents (9%) had already made the switch, while three-quarters (75%) supported stricter regulations on PFAS use. Within this group, 43% strongly backed a full ban in the UK.

Bruce Robins, director of CheckFire, said: “As regulatory momentum builds, businesses must lead the transition to a PFAS-free future.

“Our new report emphasises the responsibility and opportunity for companies to act now – aligning with upcoming EU legislation, anticipated UK measures, and the rising consumer demand for safer alternatives.”

Regulatory changes drive industry response

The European Union has set a target to ban PFAS by 2030, while UK authorities are reviewing restrictions.

PFAS chemicals, numbering over 12,000 synthetic compounds, have been widely used for their resistance to heat, water, and oil.

They are found in products such as firefighting foams, non-stick cookware, and waterproof clothing.

Growing concerns about their persistence in the environment and potential links to health risks are leading industries to explore alternatives, particularly within the fire safety sector.

CheckFire develops PFAS-free solutions

CheckFire has introduced The Green Crosshair, a symbol marking its PFAS-free Commander and CommanderEDGE fire extinguishers under The Green Range.

The company continues to develop alternative solutions that align with environmental regulations and industry safety standards.

The report suggests that businesses across various sectors will need to respond to evolving consumer expectations and legislative changes by investing in PFAS-free technologies.
