Chronic oversight of fire safety measures
As reported by The Courier, Dundee Olympia has been found to have neglected crucial fire safety regulations for an extensive eight-year period.
From its opening in June 2013 until its closure in October 2021, no tests were conducted on the building’s fire dampers, a key element in fire safety.
Violation of annual testing requirements at Dundee Olympia
According to the information obtained by The Courier, UK fire safety standards mandate annual testing of fire dampers by a qualified individual.
These dampers play a vital role in containing fires by automatically closing in response to high temperatures.
Despite this requirement, as The =revealed, Dundee Olympia failed to comply with the standard practices outlined in the code of practice – BS 9999.
Over a hundred safety issues uncovered
The Courier’s investigation also brought to light that more than 100 problems were discovered with the fire dampers at Olympia during refurbishment works in 2021.
These findings followed the centre’s temporary closure due to unrelated structural issues, leading to a prolonged shutdown for further inspections and repairs.
Whistleblower reveals cost of remedial works
In an exclusive report by The Courier, a whistleblower, who chose to remain anonymous, raised concerns about the neglected fire safety measures at Olympia.
A report from July 2022 confirmed the whistleblower’s claims, noting 102 issues with the building’s dampers.
The Dundee City Council has allocated a significant portion of a £6 million repair budget to rectify these issues, with the estimated costs for the damper repairs around £400,000.
Dundee City Council’s stance
Responding to the findings, Dundee City Council stated that the fire dampers were initially considered compliant with current standards at the time of Olympia’s completion.
The Council assured The Courier that arrangements for annual servicing and testing of the dampers are set to commence upon the building’s reopening.
