Maryland association joins the NFPA inspection chapter

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has confirmed that the Maryland Electrical Contractor and Electrical Inspector Association has become the latest Electrical Inspection Section (EIS) Affiliate Chapter.

The NFPA said the new chapter will provide training, education and networking for the state’s electrical inspection community.

Tim McClintock, NFPA lead regional electrical specialist and Executive Secretary of the Electrical Inspection Section, said: “NFPA is proud to welcome its newest EIS Affiliate Chapter.

“Through this relationship, NFPA and the Maryland electrical enforcement community can work hand-in-hand, amplifying our collective voice to tackle today’s electrical challenges and advance safety in the community.”

Importance of inspection programmes and codes

McClintock added: “A strong electrical inspection program plays a vital role in safety and compliance with NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC) and other codes, helping safeguard people and property from electrical-related hazards.

“The new NFPA EIS Affiliate Chapter actively supports electrical inspection professionals who are charged with understanding the NEC and how its requirements are applied, and is aimed at both meeting their unique needs, as well as preserving the independent voices of those engaged in electrical inspections.”

The Maryland group joins six other state associations in the US that have already become affiliate chapters.

These include Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Rhode Island.

The NFPA confirmed the new chapters form part of a wider national effort to support electrical professionals, including the creation of two additional regional electrical specialist positions.

Local perspective from Maryland officials

Ty Basham, Chief Electrical Inspector for Baltimore County, said: “As Maryland launches its newest NFPA Electrical Inspection chapter, it’s an exciting opportunity for jurisdictions, first responders, contractors, and other stakeholders to come together and have a stronger voice in shaping discussions around the latest electrical codes and state legislation.

“For years, Maryland has needed one organisation where everyone could stay informed and share perspectives from across the state.”

He continued: “After working closely with NFPA for more than six months, we were able to make this vision a reality.

“I’m thrilled to see EIS take root in Maryland.

“It gives the electrical industry not only a stronger voice, but a collaborative platform to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and strengthen the future of electrical inspection statewide.”

Membership opportunities for electrical professionals

The NFPA confirmed that inspection members of an EIS Affiliate Chapter may qualify for NFPA Electrical Inspection Membership.

The membership includes participation in the code development process, code change training, dedicated programming, products and events.

The association explained that it provides professionals with resources to stay up to date on news, research and training relating to electrical safety and enforcement.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

Electrical contractors and inspectors are directly affected by the creation of the Maryland EIS Affiliate Chapter, as it provides structured opportunities for training and education.

For building services engineers, facility managers and fire engineers, the development could improve consistency in the application of the National Electrical Code across Maryland.

For contractors and system installers, the affiliate chapter provides a central point of contact for updates on code changes, reducing the risk of misinterpretation or non-compliance.

Fire safety officers and government departments may also benefit, as the chapter supports stronger inspection programmes that help reduce electrical hazards in residential and commercial properties.
