EU citizens call for enhanced fire safety in buildings

On February 12, 2024, the Keep EU Fire Safe campaign highlighted the urgent need to address fire safety in European buildings.
With 50% of accidental residential fires originating from electrical sources and 25% of fatal fires involving furniture and mattresses, the campaign stresses the importance of updating obsolete electrical installations and enhancing the fire resistance of household items.
Despite the critical role of smoke alarms in fire safety, their installation is mandated in only two-thirds of Member States, leaving a significant portion of the population at risk, especially those living in dilapidated homes.
Electoral opportunity to shape fire safety agenda
The upcoming 2024 European Parliament elections present a unique opportunity for more than 400 million EU citizens to elect representatives who will prioritise fire safety.
EU citizens, who spend 90% of their time in buildings for various activities, expect uniform protection from fires across all European buildings, regardless of the country.
The Keep EU Fire Safe campaign urges European institutions to prioritise fire safety and collaborate with Member States to develop a consistent fire safety strategy for people in buildings.
Widespread support for the manifesto
The Fire Safety Europe (FEEDS) has endorsed the campaign’s manifesto, along with 17 other organisations.
The campaign has also garnered support from 10 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and 7 stakeholders, along with numerous testimonials.
This broad backing underscores the community’s call for immediate action to safeguard citizens from the hazards of fire in buildings.
