Addressing toxicity in fire safety solutions: A new era for fire safety and sustainability begins

Fireguardia, a U.S.-based innovator in fire protection, has been granted a U.S. patent for the world’s first chemical-free fire retardant.

This invention is set to transform fire safety by eliminating the use of harmful chemicals in flame-retardant products. The patent was issued earlier this year for a fireproof composition and related processes.

Traditional flame retardants often rely on toxic chemicals, such as phenolic formaldehyde, melamine, and brominated compounds, which can harm the environment and human health.

A recent study published by Chemosphere highlights the leaching of these substances from recycled products into consumer goods, further intensifying public health risks.

Recognising these concerns, Fireguardia has also filed a provisional patent for a smart consumer fire safety device equipped with an automatic fire extinguisher that uses this chemical-free retardant.

Rising awareness and regulatory changes

Increased awareness of the dangers associated with flame-retardant chemicals has led to regulatory actions worldwide.

In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the use of decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) in 2021, with several states implementing stricter controls. Globally, jurisdictions like New York and Washington State are advancing fire safety standards with enhanced environmental considerations.

Public housing upgrades, climate change-related fire risks, and the surge in urbanisation have further emphasised the importance of non-toxic, sustainable fire safety solutions.

A safer, greener future

Fireguardia’s patented chemical-free solution offers a sustainable alternative that prioritises safety while addressing the environmental and health challenges associated with traditional fire retardants. This breakthrough aligns with the growing demand for smart, eco-conscious designs in fire protection systems.

Looking ahead

The team at Fireguardia will share insights into their invention and future developments in an exclusive interview in an upcoming issue of IFSJ. For more details, stay tuned to International Fire and Safety Journal.

Summary: world’s first chemical-free fire retardant patented in the U.S.

Fireguardia has patented a chemical-free fire retardant, marking a significant shift in fire safety technology. This innovation eliminates harmful chemicals used in traditional retardants, addressing health and environmental concerns.

With regulatory changes increasing scrutiny on toxic substances, Fireguardia’s solution offers a sustainable and effective alternative. A related patent for a smart fire safety device is also pending. Further details will be covered in a forthcoming exclusive interview with Fireguardia’s team in IFSJ.
