Introduction to the new Chief Fire Office

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has announced the appointment of Louise Harrison as its new Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

With a 31-year career in policing, including significant roles in counter-terrorism and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Harrison’s appointment is seen as a step towards transformational leadership within the service.

The Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority highlighted her track record in leadership and commitment to public safety as key factors in her selection.

Controversy surrounding the appointment

However, this decision has been met with substantial concern from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

The FBU expressed deep worries about the appointment of a Chief Fire Officer without firefighting experience, emphasising the potential risks to public safety and trust.

Steve Wright, a representative of the FBU, articulated the union’s fears, noting the technical complexities of firefighting and the years of on-the-job learning it requires.

The FBU also underscored the importance of maintaining a distinct separation between the fire service and the police force.

Recent challenges and the need for improvement

The appointment comes at a time when Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service faces significant challenges.

A recent report by the Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) placed the service under enhanced monitoring.

The report highlighted issues with the service’s ability to identify and prioritise those most at risk from fire and concerns regarding its capacity to implement necessary improvements.

This escalation in monitoring underscores the urgent need for strategic leadership and reform within the service.

Response from the fire service and New Chief Fire Officer

In response to these challenges, Simon Rouse, chairman of the Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority, expressed confidence in Harrison’s ability to lead the service.

Harrison herself has acknowledged the importance of her new role and expressed eagerness to join the team and work towards positive improvement in public safety for the communities of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

Upcoming firefighter rally for Buckinghamshire firefighter

Amidst these developments, Buckinghamshire firefighters have planned a rally on December 6 in Milton Keynes, calling for urgent investment in the fire service and highlighting ongoing concerns within the brigade.
