Updated guidance prompts cable safety focus

AEI Cables has reported increased demand for Category 3 Control fire performance cables in the UK, following renewed attention to guidance in BS 8519:2020.

The British Standard outlines how control cables should be selected and installed in fire safety systems used in buildings such as care homes, offices, hospitals and shopping centres.

The company said these systems include evacuation alarms for disabled occupants, emergency voice communication systems and voice alarms in public buildings.

The guidance sets expectations for cable performance during fire-related emergencies and categorises cables by their survival time and function.

According to AEI Cables, following – and exceeding – these minimum standards improves the reliability of critical fire safety systems.

AEI Cables comments on current UK trends

Stuart Dover, General Manager of AEI Cables, said the company is seeing a steady rise in customer interest for Category 3 Control cable types.

He said: “We are seeing quite an increase in demand for Category 3 Control cables and we can only stress that if they meet and exceed all standards requirements this can only help in the interest of safety of property and lives in these critical spaces.

“Meeting standards is a minimum requirement but going above and beyond these standards will help firefighters in a real-life fire situation.”

AEI Cables has been promoting the role of LPCB-certified products and urging the industry to take account of updated codes of practice.

According to Dover, the cables play a role in powering systems like smoke control, heat extraction and evacuation alarms, which are relied upon during incidents requiring fire service intervention.

Firetec Enhanced and BS 8519 Category 3 Control

The company said its Firetec Enhanced cabling has received third-party certification from LPCB.

This certification applies to BS 8519 Annex B under both Category 2 Control and Category 3 Control classifications.

The BS 8519 Code of Practice includes three power cable categories and three control cable categories.

Each category aligns with survival times of 30, 60 or 120 minutes depending on the intended system function during a fire.

AEI Cables said the updated code provides clarity for contractors, developers and consultants specifying products for life safety systems.

Industry approvals and UK use cases

AEI Cables stated that its fire performance cable range is backed by third-party testing and certification from organisations including BASEC and LPCB.

The manufacturer added that it also holds approvals from Lloyds Register, the Ministry of Defence, Network Rail and London Underground.

Its cables are designed and tested to international standards and are supplied to infrastructure, defence and public sector projects.

The company said the most common UK applications include use in tall buildings, healthcare environments and transport hubs where system failure poses a life safety risk.

Role of Category 3 Control cables in emergencies

Control cables serve different functions from power cables, and Category 3 Control cables are specified for the highest level of system resilience.

These cables are used in systems that support evacuation, suppress smoke and allow fire services to manage internal conditions during an emergency.

According to AEI Cables, these systems must remain operational during extended fire exposure.

The company said reducing toxic gas and flame spread also assists in safer evacuation routes and fire service access.

AEI Cables has urged those responsible for design and specification to prioritise cables with enhanced survivability and independent certification.
