A retrospective on Graham Lowe’s career
“It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey”
Graham Lowe
Graham Lowe has retired after nearly three decades of leadership in the fire safety industry.
Lowe served as the Managing Director of Hochiki Europe, guiding the company through significant transformations.
He reflects on the changes within the fire detection industry and the strategic adaptations made by Hochiki Europe to stay at the forefront.
Lowe highlighted the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 as a pivotal change in the UK fire safety industry.
Implemented on October 1, 2005, this legislation established a robust framework for fire safety regulation across all non-domestic premises in England and Wales.
The responsibility for fire safety compliance now rests with the “responsible person,” typically the building owner or employer, marking a shift from the previous reliance on annual fire brigade inspections.
This reform increased the demand for specialist fire alarm installers and integrators, emphasising professional fire safety solutions.
Achievements and challenges during Lowe’s tenure
During his time as Managing Director, Lowe expressed pride in building a strong Senior Management Team at Hochiki Europe.
He said: “The team brings together the experience, expertise, and skills needed to propel Hochiki Europe forward.” The team focuses on four key pillars: expansion, efficiency, value addition, and employee engagement.
Lowe faced significant challenges during his tenure, notably Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brexit introduced uncertainty with new procedures and legal issues.
The pandemic caused a complete disruption of global supply chains, affecting the availability of essential components and causing shipping delays.
Lowe emphasised the importance of teamwork and communication in overcoming these obstacles.
He also highlighted the role of the HR department in ensuring employee health and safety during the pandemic, as well as maintaining transparency with customers.
Hochiki Europe’s adaptation and future plans
Hochiki Europe has made strategic investments to meet the evolving needs of its customers across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa.
The establishment of Hochiki Middle East, Hochiki India Branch Office, and Hochiki Italia has enabled enhanced local support and expanded the company’s reach.
Lowe remains committed to the fire safety industry, highlighting the importance of ongoing education and training through the Hochiki Training Academy.
He advised young professionals to stay updated on industry developments and consider specialising in specific areas to become experts.
Lowe stated: “The fire safety industry offers not only stability but also the profound satisfaction of protecting lives and property.”
Reflections and retirement plans
Reflecting on his 28 years at Hochiki Europe, Lowe described his journey as rewarding.
He started as a Regional Sales Manager and progressed to Managing Director, experiencing significant personal and professional growth.
He expressed pride in collaborating with a diverse team and working with exceptional customers worldwide.
Lowe looks forward to his retirement, planning to tend to his garden, spend quality time with his family, and play golf.
His retirement officially begins on June 27, 2024.
On June 13, Lowe was presented with a tree to commemorate his service to the industry, which he planted at Hochiki Europe headquarters in Gillingham, Kent.
Mr.
Shinsuke Kubo, promoted to Managing Director in July of last year, will now fully take over the reins for Hochiki Europe.
