Fire blanket ownership in UK homes

A recent survey by Firechief Global has highlighted a significant gap in fire safety measures across UK households.

According to the survey, 79% of UK residents do not own a fire blanket, which leaves many vulnerable to kitchen fires.

The survey, which included responses from 3,000 general consumers across the UK, including over 1,000 renters, shows that while smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are widely used, fire blankets are often overlooked.

Laurie Pollard, Managing Director of Firechief Global, emphasised the importance of fire blankets, stating: “Fire blankets are a necessity in every kitchen.

“They are designed to quickly smother small fires, particularly cooking oil fires, which are common in kitchens.”

Effective use of fire blankets

Laurie Pollard also provided practical advice on how to use a fire blanket effectively in the event of a fire.

He explained that the correct use of a fire blanket involves pulling it out by the handles, ensuring it is fully unfolded, and carefully placing it over the flames to extinguish the fire.

Pollard further advised that if the fire appears too large for the blanket to cover, it is safer to evacuate the property immediately.

He noted: “It’s crucial to leave the blanket in place until the fire has completely cooled down to avoid reigniting.” This guidance highlights the importance of proper training and awareness in using fire safety equipment effectively.

Age disparities in fire safety equipment ownership

The survey data also revealed disparities in the ownership of fire safety equipment across different age groups.

Ownership of fire blankets is notably lower among older age groups, with the 45-54 and 55+ age groups showing the lowest ownership rates at 17.68% and 15.37%, respectively.

In contrast, the ownership of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors increases with age.

Pollard expressed concern about these findings, stating: “It’s concerning to see such variability in fire safety equipment ownership across age groups.”

He emphasised the need for tailored fire safety education and awareness to address these gaps.

Enhancing fire safety measures at home

Laurie Pollard highlighted that improving fire safety at home requires more than just installing smoke alarms.

He stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive fire safety strategy, which includes having a fire blanket and ensuring that all fire safety equipment is regularly checked and in working order.

Pollard also underscored the importance of familiarising all household members with emergency procedures.

He noted that simple measures like these can significantly enhance the protection of lives and property in the event of a fire.
