Fire service psychology book addresses firefighter health and safety

Dr Kristen Wheldon has announced the release of her book Fire Service Psychology: A Comprehensive Approach to Enhancing Firefighter Health, Safety, and Longevity, now available for pre-order with Springer.

According to Dr Wheldon, publication through Springer ensures the text will reach researchers, practitioners, and educators internationally, across psychology, occupational health, and emergency services.

She explained that situating the book with an academic publisher allows psychological science to connect directly with frontline practice in fire and rescue.

Dr Wheldon said: “Publishing through Springer ensures that Fire Service Psychology reaches an international audience of researchers, practitioners, and educators across psychology, occupational health, and emergency services.

“By situating this work within a globally recognized academic platform, the text not only advances the scholarly foundation of fire service psychology but also equips clinicians with the cultural competence, research-based strategies, and practical frameworks necessary to effectively support firefighter health and well-being.

“This visibility and accessibility will help bridge the gap between psychological science and frontline practice, preparing clinicians to work with this unique and underserved population.”

Focus on firefighter health and safety

According to Dr Wheldon, the book examines the role of psychology in addressing persistent risks to firefighter health, safety, and longevity.

She explained that while fire services have made advances in training and equipment, high rates of injury and death continue to affect the profession.

The book addresses cultural and human factors in the fire service, including stress, organisational practices, and mental health.

It also covers diversity and inclusion, outlining how these issues shape the daily realities of firefighters.

According to Dr Wheldon, the analysis demonstrates how psychological knowledge can be applied to standards, legal frameworks, and organisational structures.

Strategies for early intervention and support

The book outlines approaches to overcoming resistance to psychological support in the fire service.

Dr Wheldon explained that strategies for early detection and intervention form a key theme in the text.

It highlights the importance of identifying mental health concerns early and providing practical tools for response.

The book also examines the role of psychologists within fire services, including contributions to peer support and clinical care.

Approaches such as trauma risk management strategies and suicide intervention through psychological autopsies are also detailed.

Fire service cultural competency programme

According to Dr Wheldon, the book introduces a Fire Service Cultural Competency Training Program.

She explained that this programme aims to prepare clinicians to work with the specific challenges of fire service populations.

It is presented as a structured framework that integrates cultural understanding with applied psychology.

Dr Wheldon stated that the programme is intended to support psychologists, occupational health specialists, and fire service leaders.

She added that the framework can also assist emergency service practitioners in building effective interventions.
