FM approves FireDos foam proportioners for increased viscosity capabilities

FireDos has received FM approval for its variable viscosity foam proportioners, confirming their capability to admix high-viscosity foam concentrates at a consistent proportioning rate.

The company reports that the newly optimised proportioning systems can handle foam agents with higher viscosities than previous models.

FM approval classifies the technology as a “Variable Viscosity Foam Proportioner,” meaning it can accurately mix foam concentrate and water across a range of viscosities within tested limits.

According to FireDos, this classification ensures the proportioners can be used with both Newtonian and pseudoplastic foam agents while maintaining proportioning accuracy across tested flow rates and back pressures.

Higher certified viscosity values compared to previous models

Recent FM test results indicate that the new FireDos proportioners exceed the viscosity capabilities of both prior models and FM-certified competitor products within the same category.

According to FireDos, the certified viscosity of its proportioners is, on average, 12% higher than comparable systems, as of December 2024.

This improvement is intended to provide greater flexibility in handling various foam concentrates while maintaining reliable performance.

Maintaining low pressure loss across operating ranges

FireDos states that one of the challenges of high-viscosity foam concentrates is the increased pressure loss experienced by many proportioning systems.

However, the FM test results indicate that FireDos proportioners maintain a low pressure loss even at maximum extinguishing water flow rates.

This characteristic is intended to improve system efficiency and ensure that high-viscosity foam agents can be proportioned effectively without excessive pressure drop.

FM-certified flow meter as an optional accessory

The FireDos electromagnetic flow meter, designed to measure foam agent volume flow, has also received FM approval.

FireDos reports that when installed on the return line, the flow meter provides accurate measurements of extinguishing agent flow and allows the proportioning rate to be determined.

According to FM, the calibrated tachometer, offered as an optional component, can estimate extinguishing water volume flow within a range of 20% to 100% of the maximum flow rate.

FireDos foam proportioners achieve FM approval for high-viscosity foam concentrates: Summary

FireDos has secured FM approval for its variable viscosity foam proportioners, confirming their ability to admix high-viscosity foam concentrates.

The approval confirms that these proportioners can mix both Newtonian and pseudoplastic foam agents at a constant proportioning rate across tested flow rates and back pressures.

FM test results indicate that the FireDos proportioners achieve viscosity values that are 12% higher than previous models and competitor products in the same category.

The proportioners are designed to maintain low pressure loss even at maximum extinguishing water flow.

Additionally, FireDos’ electromagnetic flow meter, which measures foam agent volume flow, has received FM certification.

The optional calibrated tachometer can estimate extinguishing water volume flow within a range of 20% to 100% of the maximum flow rate.
