Firefighters’ union warns of cuts and climate denialism in England

The Fire Brigades Union has warned that the Reform Party’s approach to public spending and climate policy poses a threat to public safety, particularly in regions affected by wildfires.

According to the Fire Brigades Union, the total area burned by wildfires this year is already higher than in any year over the past decade.

The statement follows the election of Andrea Jenkyns as the Reform Party’s first metro mayor, gaining control of Greater Lincolnshire.

Reform mayor’s climate and budget agenda questioned by FBU

The Fire Brigades Union stated that it would resist planned cuts by politicians such as Jenkyns, who is now responsible for a regional budget worth tens of millions.

Jenkyns is a member of the board of Net Zero Watch, which the union described as lobbying against climate action.

The organisation added that Jenkyns has publicly supported a reduced-spending model comparable to that of former US president Donald Trump.

Steve Wright highlights firefighter job losses and frontline climate impacts

Steve Wright, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said:

“Reform’s agenda of cuts and climate denialism poses a grave risk to public safety.”

“Just look at Andrea Jenkyns, the new mayor of Greater Lincolnshire. She has championed a Trump-style approach to public spending and is an open opponent of action on climate change.”

“Firefighters know that climate change is real because they deal with its consequences. Our members are on the frontline of protecting communities against the surge in wildfires.”

“Since 2010, the fire service has lost 12,000 firefighter jobs. As a Tory MP, Jenkyns backed those cuts.”

FBU outlines broader political concerns and response strategy

Steve Wright added:

“She and other Reform politicians are part of the establishment. They want to blame migrants for the consequences of their own policies, and to divide workers against each other.”

“The FBU stands for public safety – and that means fighting for investment, anti-racism and climate action. We stand ready to oppose the politics of the far right.”

Firefighters’ union raises concern over Reform mayor’s wildfire risk stance: Summary

The Fire Brigades Union has raised concerns over the Reform Party’s approach to climate policy and public spending.

The union cited a record-breaking wildfire season in England as justification for its warning.

Andrea Jenkyns was elected as metro mayor of Greater Lincolnshire.

Jenkyns is a board member of Net Zero Watch, a group that opposes climate action.

The FBU stated that Jenkyns supports a Trump-style public spending agenda.

Steve Wright said that climate denialism and spending cuts endanger public safety.

He highlighted the loss of 12,000 firefighter jobs since 2010.

The union linked these cuts to policies supported by Jenkyns during her time as an MP.

The FBU stated it will resist similar cuts under the Reform Party.

The union positioned itself in favour of public investment, anti-racism and climate action.
