Hochiki installs advanced fire detection system for Edinburgh retailer

A prestigious store extension in Edinburgh’s St James’ Quarter, home to Multrees Walk’s luxury retailers, has installed an advanced fire detection system from Hochiki to complement its high-end design.

According to Hochiki, GB Integrated Systems (GBIS) installed a bespoke solution using Hochiki Europe’s ESP range.

Mike Gray, GBIS Technical Director, explained the decision to use Hochiki: “We chose Hochiki as it offered a comprehensive solution for this project with a broad selection of devices, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points, base sounders and air sampling system.”

The project utilised over 40 analogue addressable devices, including an integrated air sampling system.

This technology ensures accurate detection in concealed areas, such as ceiling voids, while minimising false alarms.

Challenges of integrating fire safety in luxury retail spaces

Retailers prioritising aesthetics in luxury environments face challenges integrating fire detection systems without compromising design.

Hochiki’s solutions feature discreet devices designed to blend with interiors while maintaining robust safety standards.

The system installed by GBIS ensures effective detection without disrupting the shopping experience.

By combining multi-sensor technology with environmental adjustments, it provides accurate fire hazard identification while reducing false alarms.

A further challenge involved interfacing the store’s fire alarm system with the shopping centre’s security system.

This integration ensures tailored responses to fire incidents, minimising disruptions.

Hochiki air sampling system provides enhanced safety

The air sampling system used in the installation offers precise detection capabilities.

Integrated into the fire detection loop, it covers hard-to-reach areas and provides rapid response times.

The technology’s filtering mechanisms enable it to differentiate between real fire conditions and environmental factors, ensuring operational efficiency.

This feature reassured the retailer of the system’s reliability in protecting valuable merchandise and ensuring customer safety.

Gray noted: “The precision and reliability of our install align perfectly with the retail brand’s high standards, protecting valuable merchandise, ensuring shopper safety, and minimising disruptions from false alarms.”

A collaborative effort for premium safety solutions

GBIS’s experience with Hochiki products ensured the project met the retailer’s expectations for a system that balances safety, functionality, and aesthetic considerations.

This collaboration highlights Hochiki’s ability to cater to unique requirements in retail environments, safeguarding both assets and people.
