Wireless fire protection installed at Scotland’s oldest inhabited house
Hyfire has installed a wireless fire detection system at Traquair House, Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited house.
IQ Fire & Security, in partnership with Hyfire, planned and carried out the installation, ensuring minimal disruption to the 900-year-old building.
The fire detection system was designed to integrate with the historic structure without compromising its original features.
A representative from IQ Fire & Security said: “When dealing with such a prestigious estate, it becomes a matter larger than just safeguarding the people and structure.
“Traquair House is home to priceless relics. Thanks to Hyfire’s wireless devices, we were able to install an impressive fire alarm system without jeopardising the building’s historical integrity.”
Challenges of protecting a historic building
Traquair House, originally granted to the Stewart family in 1491, has remained inhabited for over five centuries.
It houses a collection of historical artefacts, including the crib used by Mary Queen of Scots to nurse King James I of England.
The house’s age and original features made installing a fire protection system challenging.
Traditional wired systems risked damaging the structure, requiring a fire detection solution that was both effective and unobtrusive.
Wireless technology used to safeguard the site
Hyfire’s Taurus wireless fire system was selected due to its ability to be programmed and planned off-site.
This reduced installation time and ensured minimal impact on the property.
The system was designed to blend with the interior while providing comprehensive coverage.
IQ Fire & Security worked closely with historical preservation experts to install the system without altering the building’s aesthetics.
The devices were positioned strategically following a detailed survey to maximise protection.
Balancing fire safety and heritage conservation
The project at Traquair House demonstrates how modern fire protection can be integrated into historic buildings.
Wireless systems offer an alternative to conventional wired setups, avoiding intrusive installation methods that could impact preservation efforts.
By using a wireless system, Traquair House benefits from modern fire safety measures while maintaining its historical integrity.
The installation serves as an example of how heritage sites can be protected using non-invasive technology.
