Fire system upgrade enhances safety at Burrell Mead

Burrell Mead Residential Home in South London has completed a full upgrade of its fire system using 90 wireless devices from Hyfire.

According to Hyfire, the system was installed in partnership with Bickley Fire & Security Specialists Ltd to replace a previous hardwired alarm setup.

The installation forms part of a wider safety improvement programme at the not-for-profit care home, which was established by members of the West Croydon Baptist Church in 1964.

The company stated that the new fire system uses Taurus wireless devices and is supported by the TauREX software, designed to simplify configuration and maintenance.

Hyfire explained that the upgrade was designed to protect vulnerable residents while minimising disruption to the care home’s daily operations.

Community care home installs wireless fire devices

Hyfire reported that Burrell Mead is home to elderly residents seeking both medical and spiritual care, and that uninterrupted service delivery was a key factor in planning the upgrade.

The care home operates on a not-for-profit basis and continues to serve members of the local community who require long-term residential support.

The company said the Taurus system was chosen due to its ability to deliver performance equivalent to wired systems while offering a faster installation process.

Hyfire added that its devices are well suited to settings where residents may be sensitive to disturbance or relocation during upgrade works.

It noted that the use of wireless technology helped limit both physical disruption and time on site.

Installation carried out with minimal disruption

Brett Boyd, Regional Sales Manager at Hyfire, said: “When dealing with such a facility, where many residents may be elderly or very ill, it was crucial that the installation was quick and did not disrupt day-to-day operations nor limit residents in any way.”

Hyfire confirmed that its partnership with Bickley Fire & Security Specialists Ltd was key to completing the upgrade efficiently.

The company added that the installation process required no structural alterations and involved minimal changes to the building layout.

The devices were installed to provide full coverage of the premises and integrate with other building systems.

Hyfire stated that wireless installations are especially suited to older properties where access to infrastructure may be restricted.

Technology and tools supporting the upgrade

According to Hyfire, the Taurus system includes a range of tools intended to simplify design, installation and ongoing maintenance.

The company said its TauREX software supports a graphical interface that helps engineers design tailored fire protection systems for different building types.

It reported that the software also includes EasyScan and ConfigWizard tools, which automate aspects of the setup and help engineers identify appropriate configurations.

Hyfire stated that these features support accuracy in system design and reduce installation time.

The manufacturer added that this approach ensures more reliable outcomes and improved service life across installations.

Wireless systems aligned with care sector needs

Hyfire stated that wireless fire systems are particularly relevant in residential and care home settings where vulnerable individuals must be protected without introducing unnecessary risk.

The company explained that wireless solutions offer flexible deployment and lower installation impact, which are critical in healthcare environments.

It noted that such systems are increasingly being adopted across the care sector in response to operational constraints and regulatory requirements.

Hyfire said the outcome at Burrell Mead demonstrates how wireless technology can be applied in older buildings with limited scope for rewiring or structural intervention.

It added that wireless systems are capable of meeting the same safety objectives as wired counterparts when designed and installed to specification.
