Inaugural Charles Gimingham Award launched ahead of UK Wildfire Conference 2024

Award for promising research in wildfire science

As reported by Wildfire2024, the Heather Trust has announced the inaugural Charles Gimingham Award for the most promising new entrant developing research contributing to wildfire science.

The award honours Professor Charles Gimingham OBE, the Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Aberdeen and a pioneer in heathland ecology and fire management.

The award is open to presenters at the UK Wildfire Conference 2024, held in Aberdeen, Gimingham’s home city.

Eligible applicants include current research students (Masters or PhD) or individuals within three years of completing a PhD.

Application process and deadlines

Interested applicants should first notify Eppie Sprung at The Heather Trust of their interest in the award.

Subsequently, a copy of their poster or PowerPoint presentation must be submitted to Eppie Sprung one week before the conference.

The deadline for submissions is 12 noon on Tuesday, 5th November 2024.

The award, specially designed for this occasion, will be presented at the UK Wildfire Conference dinner on Tuesday, 12th November 2024.

The presentation will be made by Professor Rob Marrs, a former President of The Heather Trust.

Professor Charles Gimingham OBE was a significant figure in heathland ecology and fire management research.

His contributions to the field have been widely recognised, and this award aims to continue his legacy by encouraging new researchers to contribute to wildfire science.
