Chemstore product awarded at UK health and safety event
Chemstore has been awarded the BSIF Safety Product Innovation Award 2025 for its ionGuard Lithium-Ion Battery Box.
According to Chemstore, the award was presented at the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) Awards during the Safety & Health Excellence (SHE) Awards on 9 April 2025.
The event was held at The Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham.
The ionGuard product was selected by judges for its design, which addresses hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries used in manufacturing, warehousing and electric vehicle applications.
Battery fires identified as key workplace safety concern
The ionGuard Lithium-Ion Battery Box is designed to contain potentially dangerous batteries that may enter thermal runaway.
Chemstore stated that traditional methods involve placing damaged or suspect batteries in exclusion zones outdoors.
IonGuard provides an alternative containment option within operational workflows.
The box is designed to prevent the spread of fire and reduce exposure to toxic gases during battery failures.
Fire suppression system uses recycled glass extinguishing agent
The fire suppression system within ionGuard can be triggered manually or automatically through heat-sensitive fusible links.
Chemstore stated that the unit uses PyroBubbles, which are glass granules made from recycled material.
These granules form an oxygen barrier when exposed to high heat, smothering the fire.
The system is designed to prevent re-ignition and mitigate the effects of battery combustion.
IonGuard integration and design flexibility highlighted
IonGuard is housed in a steel-reinforced structure with Rockwool insulation and can be customised for different battery types and sizes.
Chemstore stated that the box can be integrated into existing safety procedures, especially in environments where battery handling is routine.
Use cases include quarantining batteries flagged during testing or during charging.
Commenting on the award, Chemstore Managing Director Mike Brodie said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive the BSIF Safety Product Innovation Award.
“Being recognised for our cutting-edge innovation and technical expertise is a proud moment for the entire Chemstore team.
“This award reinforces our position as leaders in lithium-ion battery safety storage and highlights our commitment to developing solutions that protect people, property, and the environment.”
IonGuard battery safety box recognised for workplace fire risk solution: Summary
Chemstore has received the BSIF Safety Product Innovation Award 2025 for its ionGuard Lithium-Ion Battery Box.
The award was presented at the Safety & Health Excellence Awards on 9 April 2025 in Birmingham.
The ionGuard is used to safely contain lithium-ion batteries that pose a fire risk.
It features a dual-trigger fire suppression system that uses recycled glass granules to extinguish fires.
The product is built with Rockwool insulation and is compatible with different battery formats.
Chemstore stated that the box is suitable for use in manufacturing, logistics and electric vehicle operations.
It replaces the need for outdoor exclusion zones when handling questionable batteries.
The box integrates into safety systems and is designed for thermal runaway containment.
