Fire door launches with UK focus on IoT safety monitoring

Harmony has launched what it describes as the world’s first fully integrated and certified IoT fire door for residential buildings in the UK.

According to Harmony, the Auro Door is designed to continuously monitor its performance and self-test for fire safety compliance, with an initial rating of FD30 for 30 minutes of fire resistance.

The company said that Auro Door was developed to address a widespread challenge among housing providers: the difficulty in gaining access to residents’ homes for annual fire door inspections.

Harmony stated that its solution offers 24/7 remote monitoring, enabling real-time compliance tracking without physical access to the door.

The company added that the door can operate either as a standalone product or integrate into existing facilities management platforms.

Compliance data accessible without physical inspections

According to Harmony, the inability to carry out annual inspections for all fire doors has become a persistent problem for landlords, with a substantial proportion of units remaining unchecked.

The company said that Auro Door helps address this issue by delivering “always-on” compliance data that is accessible remotely by asset managers and safety teams.

The manufacturer explained that landlords can now receive live validation during installation, followed by continuous data that tracks the door’s performance against set tolerances.

It stated that this offers a shift away from reactive fire safety checks toward preventive and monitored systems.

Harmony reported that the system also supports tailored dashboards, alert notifications and predictive maintenance routines.

Predictive maintenance supports asset lifecycle planning

Harmony explained that the Auro Door platform provides insight into the wear and condition of essential fire door components, including closers.

The system provides alerts for upcoming replacement needs, enabling repairs before failure compromises fire resistance performance.

According to the company, this approach contributes to more accurate lifecycle planning and cost management for large housing portfolios.

Harmony stated that the door system collects pattern-recognition data over time, refining its predictive capabilities through AI-based learning.

This allows the door to adjust maintenance forecasts and respond to changes in real-world operating conditions.

Integration with golden thread information systems

Harmony stated that Auro Door was developed with the Golden Thread of Information principle in mind, supporting end-to-end traceability and compliance documentation.

Once installed, the door’s operational data is recorded continuously, aligning with UK building safety regulations requiring digital records and asset performance history.

The company added that this makes the system suitable for social housing and multi-residence buildings that fall under the scope of new regulatory frameworks.

Data can be accessed via Harmony’s standalone interface or linked to broader estate management software.

Harmony said this flexibility allows building operators to centralise their monitoring processes or integrate fire door oversight into existing workflows.

Executive comments on resident safety and compliance

Ged Moore, Managing Director at Auro by Harmony, said: “Auro Door addresses a major challenge facing organisations with responsibility for resident safety, that of access to homes to assess fire door compliance.

“Registered Providers regularly report that over a third of fire doors cannot be annually inspected due to access issues, with Auro Door providing an innovative solution for safety compliance that is constantly vigilant and self-reporting.

“As a front-line defense against the ingress of smoke and fire into homes, Auro Door is a life-saving barrier, manufactured to the highest quality standards and incorporating a unique active monitoring system that transforms fire door compliance from annual inspection to self-reporting and diagnosis.”

The company said that Auro Door forms part of a wider portfolio of connected life safety products under development.

It stated that future products will be similarly integrated into IoT systems, supporting digital oversight of safety-critical infrastructure.
