Local emergency committees inaugurated in Katsina State

The Katsina State Government has inaugurated Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) for all 34 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

The inauguration ceremony took place on 25 February 2025 and was attended by government officials, emergency management representatives, and other stakeholders.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, was represented by the Northwest Zonal Coordinator, Mal. Suleiman Muhammad, who served as the Special Guest.

The event was presided over by the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Lawal Jobe (H.C.I.B), who represented Governor Mallam Dikko Umar Radda.

Also in attendance were the Executive Secretaries of State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) from Gombe, Jigawa, Zamfara, and Kano states, alongside commissioners, heads of government agencies, local government chairmen, and traditional leaders.

Strengthening disaster preparedness at the community level

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hajia Binta Hussaini Dangani, highlighted the importance of enhancing disaster preparedness.

She acknowledged NEMA’s support in strengthening the state’s disaster management framework and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts at the grassroots level.

Role of LEMCs in emergency response

Delivering the speech on behalf of NEMA’s Director General, Mal. Suleiman Muhammad stated: “As the first responders in times of emergencies, you are the strongest link in the chain of disaster prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery.”

He urged committee members to remain proactive and dedicated to their responsibilities, stressing that their role is essential in ensuring an effective emergency response system.

Presentation on disaster management strategies

The event featured a presentation on the Disaster Management Framework by Yusuf Ahmed Gyallesu.

He provided insights into risk identification, early warning systems, and strategies for effective emergency response.

These discussions focused on improving preparedness through structured frameworks and early intervention measures.
