New smoke detection technology introduced by Kidde Commercial

Kidde Commercial has introduced the EXCELLENCE series smoke detectors, which incorporate patented optical sensing technology designed to enhance accuracy and reduce false alarms.

The detectors are developed to address common nuisance alarm issues while improving detection performance.

The multi-wave, multi-angle smoke detection system uses MIE light scattering theory to distinguish between harmless airborne particles and serious fire threats.

According to Kidde Commercial, this technology is particularly beneficial in locations with increased risk of nuisance alarms, such as hotels, universities, kitchens, and leisure facilities.

The detectors are capable of identifying specific types of particulate matter associated with real fire incidents, allowing for faster and more precise responses.

Dual detection mode enhances smoke discrimination

The EXCELLENCE series features a dual detection mode, allowing it to switch between normal and analysis modes.

In normal mode, the detector operates using only the forward scattering signal of its infrared LED, similar to traditional smoke detectors.

If a trigger level is exceeded, the system shifts to analysis mode, where it activates all three detection LEDs to assess the forward and back scatter ratios.

An alarm is only triggered when the detector determines that the particle ratios meet a predefined threshold.

This process minimises the occurrence of false alarms, reducing unnecessary disruptions and emergency responses.

Drift compensation for consistent performance

To maintain long-term reliability, the EXCELLENCE series includes an automated drift compensation feature.

The detector continuously monitors clean air values, recalibrating them at power-up, after system resets, and every two hours during standard operation.

If air quality readings exceed the compensation range, the system signals a maintenance fault to the control panel.

Kidde Commercial states that this function helps ensure accurate performance over time, reducing the likelihood of sensor degradation due to dust or environmental contamination.

Integration with legacy systems

The EXCELLENCE series is designed to be compatible with Kidde Commercial’s 2000 series devices, enabling seamless integration into existing systems.

This compatibility allows for gradual system expansion without requiring a full replacement, providing a scalable solution for fire detection networks.

The detectors also include built-in local event logs, which help streamline maintenance and troubleshooting efforts.

Kidde Commercial launches EXCELLENCE series smoke detectors with patented optical sensing: Summary

Kidde Commercial has introduced the EXCELLENCE series smoke detectors, which utilise patented optical sensing technology to improve fire detection and reduce false alarms.

The detectors use multi-wave, multi-angle smoke analysis to differentiate between nuisance particles and real threats.

The series features a dual detection mode, shifting from normal operation to analysis mode when triggered, using three LEDs to verify the presence of smoke.

A drift compensation system recalibrates clean air values regularly, ensuring consistent performance.

The detectors are compatible with Kidde Commercial’s legacy 2000 series devices, allowing for incremental system upgrades.

Built-in event logs help streamline maintenance and fault detection.
