New contracts awarded in Manchester and Birmingham
Light Science Technologies has announced that its Passive Fire Protection division has secured two new contracts worth about £0.45m.
According to Light Science Technologies, the contracts cover fire protection remediation at a hotel in Manchester and a school building in Birmingham.
The hotel is operated by a multinational chain, while the school building contract is with a major UK construction company.
The company reported that both contracts may expand in scope, as each client manages a wider portfolio of buildings with similar requirements.
It added that the work is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2025.
Fire protection work linked to remediation demand
Light Science Technologies explained that demand for passive fire protection is being driven by building remediation requirements across the UK.
It said the government has made repeated commitments to clear the remediation backlog.
The business indicated that its methods are designed to be cost-effective and minimally disruptive.
It also stated that the scale of the opportunity is expanding as both new and existing clients seek solutions for non-compliant structures.
The group reported that wider demand continues to come from residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
Building safety regulation reforms
Light Science Technologies noted that regulatory change is expected to accelerate both remediation and new construction.
It said an arm’s length body has recently been established under the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The new body is assuming certain responsibilities of the Building Safety Regulator.
The company added that the changes are intended to fast-track approvals for new building projects and remediation schemes.
It explained that once the reforms are fully implemented, they may create opportunities to increase operations in the sector.
Company outlook for future projects
Light Science Technologies reported that it is in active talks with both potential and existing customers about additional contracts.
It explained that it has seen growing demand for larger projects, which could increase revenue from the Passive Fire Protection division.
The company said the board is confident of securing further contracts in the short term.
It added that this confidence is based on ongoing market demand and the current pipeline of quotations.
The organisation stated that momentum in the fire protection segment is improving as projects move through approval processes.
CEO statement on pipeline and opportunities
Simon Deacon, CEO of Light Science Technologies, said: “We are delighted by the improving momentum in the PFP division, seeing further conversion of the c.£24 million quoted pipeline.
“Despite broader market issues causing some contract delays, specifically the long timescales taken by the Building Safety Regulator to sign off fire safety in tall buildings, and the UK Government responding by making structural changes to the regulator itself, we are now seeing this bottleneck starting to unblock and are confident that pipeline conversion will rapidly grow.
“Encouragingly, we are already seeing initial follow-on activity with one customer.
“This is a legislation-backed opportunity and our solution is already proven, with a growing number of existing and new clients wanting to rectify non-compliant public and private buildings, spanning residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.”
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
The new contracts reflect how regulatory reform and remediation demand are creating work for fire protection providers.
Professionals in the sector can note the role of passive fire protection in bringing existing buildings into compliance.
The changes to the Building Safety Regulator process also indicate how approvals and project delivery may shift in coming years.
For practitioners, these developments highlight both regulatory drivers and client demand shaping the market.
