London Fire Brigade highlights 2024 improvements and 2025 plans
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe has reflected on the past year, acknowledging challenges and significant progress within the Brigade.
According to the Commissioner, His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services recognised improvements made across the Brigade in their latest inspection report.
Commissioner Roe attributed this progress to the dedication of staff and the support of the Mayor of London.
Highlighting incidents attended by the Brigade in 2024, Commissioner Roe mentioned fires at Somerset House and residential buildings on Elm Road in Wembley and Freshwater Road in Dagenham.
He praised firefighters for their professionalism and bravery during these complex operations.
Grenfell legacy and cultural change within the Brigade
The Grenfell Tower tragedy remained a key focus for the Brigade.
Commissioner Roe recalled attending Testimony Week in January 2024 and reflecting on the experiences shared by the Grenfell community.
Following the publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report in September, Commissioner Roe emphasised the importance of learning from the tragedy.
He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to the bereaved families, survivors, and residents.
Key developments included policy changes, enhanced training, and new equipment aimed at improving responses to emergencies, particularly in residential high-rise buildings.
New initiatives and operational improvements in 2024
Last year saw the implementation of several new initiatives aimed at improving standards and efficiency within the Brigade.
In January, the Brigade launched a Professional Standards Unit, marking a first for a UK fire and rescue service.
The unit was established to monitor and uphold professional standards of behaviour across the organisation.
Additionally, changes to the Brigade’s response to automatic fire alarms were introduced, enabling resources to focus on fire prevention and advanced operational training.
Looking ahead: Commitment to continuous improvement
Commissioner Roe stated that the Brigade remains committed to continuous improvement in 2025.
He described change as integral to how the organisation operates.
The Commissioner pledged to maintain a listening and learning approach while leading efforts to enhance fire safety and response capabilities.
