Initial assessment of Kiel fire department turntable ladder accident
Magirus has responded to an accident on October 17, 2024, involving a Magirus turntable ladder occurred within the Kiel fire department in Germany
The specific turntable ladder model, M32L-AS, had been provided to the Kiel fire department in March 2016.
Following the incident, Magirus representatives conducted an initial investigation at the scene alongside Kiel fire department officials and TÜV Nord, an independent expert engaged by the City of Kiel.
Upon obtaining approval, the damaged turntable ladder was transported to Ulm for further analysis.
Further examination in Ulm reveals rope failure
In Ulm, Magirus technicians, working with TÜV Nord experts, dismantled individual parts of the ladder, exposing the ladder’s extension ropes for inspection.
Findings indicated that the accident was caused by a failure in the ladder’s extension ropes.
No faults were identified in the winch system, welding assemblies, or rope guidance mechanisms.
Magirus also initiated separate studies with TÜV Süd to verify the findings and ensure comprehensive analysis.
Emphasis on adherence to maintenance protocols
In response to the accident, Magirus reminded fire brigades to strictly follow all maintenance protocols detailed in the operation manual for their turntable ladders, with particular attention to the ‘Maintenance’ section.
Magirus recommends that fire brigades perform visual inspections of ladder ropes as outlined in the maintenance guide, emphasising that, when maintained properly, there is no need to remove Magirus turntable ladders from service.
Ongoing support for fire departments
Magirus has reiterated its commitment to providing information and support to fire brigades.
As additional findings emerge, Magirus plans to communicate these updates promptly.
