Breathing apparatus contract awarded to MSA for Southern California fire agency

MSA Safety has announced it will supply respiratory protective equipment to the Orange County Fire Authority under a contract valued at $10 million.

According to MSA Safety, the contract will support the fire department’s transition to updated self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units, selected following a review of available technologies.

The company stated that the G1 SCBA was chosen based on its digital features and modular design that allows future upgrades.

G1 SCBA chosen for connectivity and upgrade potential

MSA Safety reported that the Orange County Fire Authority selected its G1 SCBA system after a detailed evaluation process.

The organisation noted that factors influencing the decision included the SCBA’s embedded connectivity, its compatibility with the FireGrid software platform, and the ability to add new features over time.

MSA Safety said that the FireGrid system allows incident commanders to access live data such as air pressure, battery status and alarm notifications to support personnel oversight during operations.

G1 SCBA includes embedded thermal imaging for individual firefighters

The manufacturer explained that the G1 SCBA includes an integrated thermal imaging camera (iTIC), providing firefighters with direct access to visual information during incidents.

It added that the iTIC is part of the SCBA’s control module and includes a built-in video screen and other electronic components that support its operation.

According to the company, this feature allows each firefighter to use thermal imaging tools individually rather than relying on shared handheld devices.

MSA aims to build presence across Southern California

MSA Safety stated that this agreement further extends its supply of SCBA equipment in Southern California, following contracts with the Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City Fire Departments over the past two years.

Bob Apel, MSA Safety Executive Director, Global Fire Service and Digital Experience, said: “When it comes to protecting first responders, our vision at MSA Safety is to provide fire departments with the most advanced and versatile safety solutions available today.

“Our G1 breathing apparatus is a fitting example of that vision.

“The platform provides ongoing value to fire departments because it enables us to continuously add new technologies to the SCBA that enhance firefighter health and safety.

“That vision is consistent with our growth strategy to be the leading innovator in head-to-toe protection for the fire service.”

Joann Serakowski, MSA Safety Vice President, Fire Service – U.S. and Canada, said: “We are incredibly proud to establish this new partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority.

“Most importantly, we’re honoured the department has entrusted MSA with the responsibility of protecting the men and women who help keep the residents of Orange County safe each day.”
