Workshop addressed municipal action plans for wildfire risk
The Government of Navarre recently gathered representatives from 85 municipalities to advance the implementation of fire prevention strategies.
The Department of the Interior, Civil Service and Justice, through its Emergency, Prevention and Civil Protection Service, organised a workshop to inform local governments about the development and execution of Municipal Action Plans for Forest Fire Risk (PAMIF).
The event, chaired by Minister Amparo López, took place at the Bardenas Reales Natural Park Interpretation Centre.
Mayors and municipal representatives from across the region attended to discuss wildfire prevention measures and response coordination.
Government called for coordinated wildfire response
During the event, López urged municipalities to work together with the regional government to ensure a structured approach to wildfire prevention.
She stated: “We must act ahead with effective plans and prepared communities.
“And in this ambitious task, the municipalities must know that they have the support and guidance of the Government of Navarre to create a resilient network against any threat.”
López stressed that wildfire prevention required proactive planning rather than reactive responses after fires had already occurred.
Over 50 municipalities had approved fire prevention plans
By the time of the workshop, 56 municipalities in Navarre had approved their PAMIFs.
An additional 21 municipalities were awaiting approval, while eight had finalised plans pending municipal plenary sessions.
Six more had begun drafting their fire emergency plans.
Beyond the municipalities required to implement PAMIF, 10 towns had voluntarily developed their own fire prevention strategies with guidance from Civil Protection technicians.
Key measures for fire prevention and preparedness
At the workshop, officials discussed key strategies for fire prevention, including reducing vegetation in areas where urban and forested zones meet, expanding hydrant coverage, and improving local emergency response coordination.
Authorities also emphasised the importance of informing residents about fire safety measures and ensuring they understood the actions to take in the event of a wildfire.
The session reinforced that maintaining and reviewing these plans on an annual basis was essential for ensuring their long-term effectiveness.
