New training announced for sprinkler design

The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA) has announced that it will introduce a new FHC course in high rise and full hydraulic sprinkler design for non storage occupancies.

According to BAFSA, the course will begin in September 2026 and will address the classification and design of pre-calculated commercial sprinkler systems in line with the LPC Rules including BS EN 12845.

The organisation stated that the programme will focus on system classifications, storage configurations, storage heights, system requirements, head spacing, pipework sizing and water supply arrangements.

It added that the course has been designed to provide knowledge and skills required to apply sprinkler design principles across non storage occupancies.

Course delivery and structure

BAFSA confirmed that the new course will be delivered remotely through an online virtual classroom.

The training will consist of one day per week over 10 weeks, followed by post-course work.

The association explained that the total programme time is 12 months to allow for submission of the required post-course work.

BAFSA noted that this structure is intended to balance flexible delivery with comprehensive coverage of sprinkler design requirements.

Entry requirements set for candidates

According to BAFSA, applicants must hold an ABBE Level 5 Diploma in system classification and design of pre-calculated commercial fire sprinkler systems.

Candidates must also have completed the LPCB basic and intermediate competence review.

The organisation said these requirements are in place to ensure that course participants have a suitable foundation in sprinkler system design.

Certification and outcomes

BAFSA stated that successful completion of the training and post-course work will result in a BAFSA certificate being awarded.

The organisation explained that this certification will confirm competence in high rise and full hydraulic sprinkler design for non storage occupancies.

Further details including enrolment information and course fees will be provided on the BAFSA website.

Change to existing refresher course

BAFSA advised that its FHC design competency refresher course is no longer available.

It confirmed that the new high rise and full hydraulic sprinkler design course will take its place in the association’s training offering.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

This training introduces a structured pathway for UK professionals seeking competency in sprinkler design for non storage occupancies.

The course focuses on the design and classification of pre-calculated sprinkler systems, aligned with recognised LPC Rules and BS EN 12845 standards.

It provides an opportunity for designers and engineers to formalise knowledge in high rise and full hydraulic system design.

By setting defined entry requirements, the programme aims to ensure participants have appropriate background knowledge before undertaking advanced sprinkler design training.
