NIFRS launches recruitment drive across 43 stations in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is inviting individuals living or working within five minutes of their local fire station to apply for roles as on-call firefighters.

On-call firefighters work part-time, responding to emergency incidents in their communities through a pager system.

This recruitment campaign spans 43 stations across Northern Ireland, including Antrim, Armagh, Ballycastle, Ballyclare, Ballynahinch, Banbridge, Enniskillen, Newry, and more.

David Doherty, NIFRS Western Area Commander, emphasised the critical role of on-call firefighters: “Our On-Call Firefighters are the cornerstone of our Fire & Rescue Service.

“They provide emergency response to their local communities 24/7, 365 days a year.”

Key requirements and training opportunities

The role is suited to individuals who live or work near their local fire station, have a strong sense of community, and are physically fit.

No prior experience is required, as NIFRS provides comprehensive training at its new Learning & Development College in Cookstown.

The training facility enables recruits to develop their skills and competence in a first-class environment.

Successful candidates participate in a 12-day annual training programme and weekly drill nights to maintain the highest professional standards.

Doherty added: “If you are successful, you will be joining NIFRS at a really exciting time.

“No previous experience or training is required to apply, just dedication and a willingness to learn in order to be there when your community needs you most.”

Recognising local employers’ contributions

Doherty also acknowledged the essential support of local employers who allow their employees to serve as on-call firefighters: “Without them, the success of our On-Call Firefighter system wouldn’t work.

“If you are a local employer and are willing to work with us, please contact your local On-Call Fire Station for more information.”

Employers play a vital role in the system by providing the flexibility needed for employees to respond to emergencies.

NIFRS encourages further collaboration with local businesses to strengthen community safety efforts.

Application process and closing date

On-call firefighters receive a retaining fee, emergency call-out payments, and compensation for attending weekly drill sessions.

Interested candidates can apply online through the NIFRS website, where application packs are available for download.

The deadline for applications is Friday 14 February 2025 at 12 noon.
