Challenge launches in the United States
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has launched its first Step Strong Challenge for first responders.
According to the NVFC, the challenge will run throughout October and will require participants to track their steps daily using a smartphone or activity tracker.
The NVFC said participants who meet step targets will have the chance to enter prize raffles, with higher totals offering additional chances to win.
The organisation added that the overall top stepper will receive a grand prize, which will be announced after the competition ends.
Prizes will be awarded in early November.
How participants can join the challenge
The NVFC has reported that those wishing to take part must download the Challenge app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
It said participants should select the “NVFC Step Strong” option and register through the app.
The council added that users can pair their device or use a smartphone to track steps directly.
According to the NVFC, step data must be synced daily for activity to count towards the challenge.
It said participants must complete at least one sync every 24 hours to ensure accurate totals.
Step goals and prize eligibility
The NVFC has explained that anyone reaching 200,000 steps during the month, equal to about 6,500 steps per day, will qualify for a raffle.
It added that those who reach 300,000 steps, equal to around 9,700 daily steps, will be entered into an additional raffle.
The organisation confirmed that the top 10 steppers will also be placed in a separate draw.
It said that the single highest stepper overall will be awarded the top prize.
The NVFC reported that prize winners will be notified in early November through email and social media.
Bonus activities for extra steps
The NVFC has outlined that bonus activities will give participants additional step credits.
It said registering for the free October training “The Power of Hope: Strengthening Resilience and Wellbeing in First Responders” will provide a 5,000-step boost.
It added that visiting the NVFC’s Resources for Families of Volunteer Responders page will earn another 5,000 steps.
The council explained that members will be sent exclusive instructions by email for an extra 5,000 steps, with eligibility requiring membership by 16 October.
It also noted that registering for the October mentorship webinar will give another 5,000 steps.
Competition within departments and families
The NVFC has suggested that first responders can increase engagement by competing with colleagues and family members.
It said departments may choose to run their own competitions for the most steps logged.
The organisation added that the challenge is designed to encourage physical activity in a supportive, team-oriented way.
It reported that participants can monitor their progress through the app’s leaderboard.
According to the NVFC, these features are intended to help maintain motivation across the month-long challenge.
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
The NVFC Step Strong Challenge highlights the link between responder wellbeing and operational readiness.
Fitness initiatives can help reduce health risks associated with the physical demands of firefighting and emergency response.
By offering department-based competition, the challenge also supports teamwork, morale and resilience among first responders.
The NVFC’s approach aligns with wider efforts across the sector to improve mental and physical health outcomes for personnel.
