Contract with Poland Volunteer Fire Company ends
The Poland Joint Fire District in New York has announced it will not renew its contract with the Poland Volunteer Fire Company.
According to the Observer-Dispatch, the decision was taken at a meeting of the district board on 19 August, with confirmation posted shortly afterwards on the board’s official Facebook page.
The board stated that coverage will now be provided by Newport Fire Company of the Newport Fire District, Barneveld Fire Company of the Trenton Fire District, and the Deerfield and Remsen Fire Departments, depending on location.
The district advised that this arrangement will continue until further notice while it works on longer-term plans for local fire protection.
The announcement was met with criticism from residents on the public Facebook page, who expressed concerns about the change.
Board responds to rumours
The Poland Joint Fire District addressed speculation circulating online about the reasons for ending the contract.
In its statement, the board said there were members of the community who were sharing “false, misleading, dangerous, and libelous” information.
It added: “Electing to halt using the Poland Volunteer Fire Company as the agency for fire protection was not a knee-jerk reaction; it was not planned months ago, as it’s been falsely alleged, there is zero political motivation, and there is no expectation of financial gain.”
The board explained that the aim was to ensure the district had “a Poland Fire Department with the best leadership possible in place in the very near future.”
It also stated that claims about tax increases connected to the decision were untrue.
Fire services maintained
On 25 August, the Poland Joint Fire District board released a further statement to address concerns about service continuity.
Board officials said there would be no lapse in fire coverage for residents of the district.
They confirmed that Barneveld and Newport fire companies had more than 35 interior certified firefighters supported by additional personnel.
The statement also highlighted the presence of 20 emergency medical technicians and 16 specialists trained in swift water and ice rescues.
Officials noted that additional responders were trained for off-road rescues using ATVs and UTVs.
Training and qualifications
The Poland Joint Fire District said the Barneveld and Newport departments have five nationally certified fire instructors.
It added that their officers had completed the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control officer training series.
The board emphasised that these qualifications meant the neighbouring departments were fully capable of providing fire and rescue services across the Poland district.
“The Poland Fire District residents’ safety has always been the main focus of the majority of this board,” the 25 August statement concluded.
Upcoming meetings
The next meeting of the Poland Joint Fire District board will take place on 16 September at 6 p.m.
According to the Observer-Dispatch, the meeting will be held at the town of Russia Municipal Building in Poland at 8916 North Main Street.
The board confirmed that all meetings are open to the public.
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
This development shows how fire districts manage contract transitions and reassure communities about service coverage.
It highlights the role of mutual aid and inter-district cooperation when changes affect frontline operations.
It also illustrates how fire authorities communicate about training standards, personnel capacity, and continuity of response during periods of organisational change.
