Aaron Freund, Director of Sales – Industrial and Fire Divisions at Streamlight®, explains how advances in portable lighting are enhancing firefighter safety, visibility and operational performance
As firefighters contend with increasingly complex incidents, what do you see as the biggest challenges they face when it comes to visibility and scene safety?
The ability to see and understand the fireground and their surroundings as a firefighter is so important, because it directly affects how quickly and confidently decisions can be made. At any incident, but particularly in more complex environments such as high-rise buildings, industrial sites or large-scale emergency scenes, conditions can change very quickly.
Smoke, darkness, debris, heat, water, structural damage and unfamiliar layouts can all limit visibility and make it harder for crews to assess risk. For firefighters, visibility is not simply about being able to see what is immediately in front of them.
It is about maintaining situational awareness, identifying hazards, understanding where colleagues are positioned and recognising how the incident is developing. The more clearly firefighters can understand their surroundings, the better equipped they are to move safely, communicate effectively and make fast, informed decisions.
Scene safety also depends heavily on coordination. When visibility is poor, even simple tasks can become more difficult and more dangerous. Reliable lighting helps firefighters operate with greater control, whether they are navigating through a smoke-filled structure, working around apparatus, carrying out search and rescue or supporting operations from the exterior of the incident.
In that sense, high-performance lighting plays a vital role in helping crews stay aware, stay connected and work more safely in challenging conditions.
How can investing in high-performance lighting improve firefighter safety and operational efficiency without compromising value for departments?
Investing in rechargeable lights can greatly reduce a department’s operating costs, because it allows teams to have high-performance lighting without the ongoing need to buy replacement disposable batteries.
That is a very practical consideration for fire departments, especially when budgets are under pressure and equipment needs to deliver reliable performance over a long service life. For a department, lighting is not a one-off purchase that sits on a shelf. It is used regularly, during callouts, training, inspections, maintenance work and wider operational tasks.
If every light relies on disposable batteries, those costs can quickly build up across a station or an entire service. Rechargeable lighting helps reduce that ongoing spend, while also making it easier to keep equipment ready for use.
Crews can return lights to charge after use and know they are prepared for the next incident. There is also an important operational benefit. High-performance lighting supports firefighter safety by helping crews see more clearly, work more efficiently and reduce the risk of delays caused by poor visibility or failing equipment.
When firefighters can rely on their lights to perform consistently, they can focus on the task in front of them rather than the limitations of their equipment. The sustainability point is also becoming more important. Reducing the use of disposable batteries supports a more responsible operational footprint, which many departments are actively considering.
The value comes from combining safety, performance, reduced running costs and long-term reliability in one solution.
Which technological innovations in portable lighting do you believe will have the greatest impact on firefighter safety and effectiveness over the next five years?
Rechargeable battery technology is one of the most important innovations, because it allows for better battery life, constant run time and output, while often helping to reduce the weight and size of the product. For firefighters, that combination is extremely valuable.
They need lighting that performs consistently in demanding environments, but they also need equipment that is practical to carry, wear and use during long and physically demanding incidents. One of the key advantages of improved rechargeable battery technology is reliability.
Firefighters need to know that their light will deliver dependable illumination throughout the task, rather than fading quickly or becoming unpredictable. More consistent output helps crews maintain visibility and confidence, particularly when working in smoke, confined spaces or poor weather conditions.
Battery development is also helping manufacturers design smaller and lighter products without sacrificing performance. This matters because firefighters already carry a significant amount of equipment.
Any reduction in size or weight can help improve comfort, mobility and overall effectiveness, especially during extended operations. Over the next five years, I think the greatest impact will come from the continued combination of rechargeable systems, efficient LED technology and smarter product design.
Lighting will need to deliver strong output, reliable run time, durability and ease of use, while remaining compact enough to integrate naturally into the firefighter’s existing gear. The best innovations will be those that make lighting more dependable in real use, not just more advanced on paper.
What are the most significant trends shaping the future of the fire service and how is Streamlight adapting to help firefighters respond to these emerging challenges?
Streamlight prides itself on being advanced when it comes to the technology in lighting and how it applies to the fire service. That means looking closely at how firefighters are working today but also paying attention to how the role is changing. The fire service is facing increasingly complex incidents, greater pressure on resources and a continued need to improve safety, efficiency and readiness.
One of the major trends is the demand for equipment that can support a wide range of operational scenarios. Firefighters are not only responding to traditional structure fires.
They are dealing with road traffic collisions, industrial incidents, technical rescues, hazardous environments, severe weather events and large-scale emergency scenes. Lighting products therefore need to be versatile, durable and dependable across many different applications.
Another important trend is the move towards more efficient and sustainable equipment. As departments look to control costs and reduce waste, rechargeable technology will continue to play an important role. Products that can reduce ongoing battery spend while delivering consistent performance are well aligned with the needs of modern fire services.
At Streamlight, we are consistently listening and working directly with firefighters to understand their needs as the market changes. That direct feedback is essential. It helps ensure product development is grounded in real operational requirements, rather than assumptions.
By staying close to the people using the equipment in the field, Streamlight can continue to develop lighting solutions that support visibility, safety, durability and confidence in the most demanding environments
