RFS announces statewide events for bush fire preparation
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has called on residents to use this weekend, 21 and 22 September, to prepare for the upcoming bush fire season.
As reported by the NSW Rural Fire Service, more than 300 Rural Fire Brigades will be holding community events across the state during the Get Ready Weekend.
These events will feature firefighting equipment displays, information stands, and workshops aimed at educating the public on bush fire readiness.
Minister for Emergency Services highlights rising fire risk
Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib urged residents to act now, given the anticipated return of hot and dry conditions.
“We can’t be complacent. After several years of rainfall and flooding the vegetation has grown quickly and that is now drying out with the warmer weather, adding to fire risk,” said Minister Dib.
Recent research shows that while 70% of residents in bush fire-prone areas have a plan, less than half have taken steps to prepare their properties for fire threats.
Volunteer firefighters offer advice and support
This weekend, volunteer firefighters will be available to offer guidance on simple, cost-effective measures to reduce bush fire risks.
“Volunteer firefighters will be on hand this weekend to discuss simple and cost-effective measures to reduce bush fire risk, such as clearing out gutters, trimming overhanging branches, and completing a Bush Fire Survival Plan,” said Minister Dib.
Community members are encouraged to attend events at local parks, fire stations, and other venues to learn more about fire prevention and emergency planning.
RFS Commissioner calls for shared responsibility in fire preparation
NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers emphasised that bush fire preparation is a shared responsibility.
Since July, firefighters have responded to over 1,100 bush and grass fires across the state.
“While our firefighters are doing everything they can by conducting hazard reduction burns when weather conditions allow, preparation is a shared responsibility,” said Commissioner Rogers.
He advised residents to have a plan, know when to leave, and help ensure their families and neighbours are equally prepared.
