Queensland confirms largest-ever fire trucks acquisition
Queensland Fire Department (QFD) will receive 80 new firefighting vehicles under an agreement between Volvo Group Australia and Fraser Engineering Group.
The companies announced on Sunday 21 September 2025 that the deal represents the state’s largest-ever procurement of fire trucks.
The vehicles will be deployed across Queensland, with regional brigades prioritised.
Focus on firefighter safety and community response
Volvo Group Australia said the new trucks will be equipped with advanced active and passive safety technologies.
The aim is to provide both metropolitan and regional brigades with reliable equipment that improves operational performance.
QFD said it has developed a new fleet delivery model in partnership with Volvo and Fraser to align with organisational requirements.
This model will distribute advanced firefighting capability uniformly across the state.
Technology, emissions standards and local assembly
The new vehicles will be built on Volvo’s FL 4×4 Crew Cab chassis.
They will be fitted with Fraser Engineering’s Type 2 fire and rescue bodies.
The trucks will meet Euro 6 emission standards for diesel engines, which set limits on nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.
Volvo Group Australia confirmed that this update improves both environmental performance and firefighter working conditions.
Certain assembly and fit-out work will be prioritised to support Queensland’s automotive sector.
Industry perspectives on the project
Cameron Bettany, Vice President of Group Governmental Sales at Volvo Group Australia, said: “Volvo Group Australia and Fraser Engineering Group are incredibly proud to lead the way in fire appliance design.
“It also allows us to provide Queensland’s frontline responders with top-tier vehicles that ensure community safety.
“This partnership sets a new industry standard for fire vehicles and delivers greater preparedness for Queensland communities.”
Martin Merrick, President and CEO of Volvo Group Australia, emphasised: “Queensland Fire Department is leading the way in modern emergency response.
“From last year’s acquisition of Volvo electric vehicles to today’s delivery of 80 state-of-the-art fire trucks, QFD continues to set new benchmarks in safety, sustainability and innovation.
“Volvo Group Australia is proud to be their partner on this journey.”
Martin Simpson, CEO of Fraser Engineering Group, highlighted: “This partnership demonstrates the strength of regional manufacturing across Australasia.
“By combining Fraser Engineering’s New Zealand expertise with Volvo Group Australia’s leadership, we’re delivering world-class fire trucks designed for local conditions.
“This proves that regional innovation can set new standards in protecting our communities.”
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
The acquisition of 80 new fire trucks by Queensland Fire Department is relevant for senior fire officers, procurement managers and equipment specifiers.
The delivery demonstrates how large-scale procurement programmes can prioritise both firefighter safety and emissions compliance through collaboration with vehicle and body manufacturers.
The use of Volvo FL 4×4 Crew Cab chassis with Fraser Engineering bodies shows how fleet design choices integrate safety technologies with operational requirements for regional and metropolitan brigades.
The decision to adopt Euro 6 emission standards provides a practical case of how fire services can align with environmental regulations while improving performance and working conditions.
The project’s inclusion of local assembly and fit-out also provides an example for government departments and procurement teams seeking to support domestic industries through equipment investment.
