The blaze started in one of the engines of the oil tanker due to a technical fault which sent plumes of smoke in to the atmosphere.

The incident is the second in recent months at the Homs refinery, the main tanker in Syria. In January there was a large fire and blast involving a crude oil loading station and dozens of trucks that transport petroleum products across the country.

Last month there was a fire on an oil tanker off the Banias refinery after a suspected attack by a drone .
