ROCKWOOL secures land for new Birmingham facility

ROCKWOOL has signed an agreement to acquire 114 acres (46 hectares) at the Peddimore site, located northeast of Birmingham.

ROCKWOOL plans to develop a manufacturing facility on this land, equipped with advanced electric melting technology for the production of stone wool insulation.

The new facility aims to meet rising demand from customers in the UK and Republic of Ireland and align with ROCKWOOL’s sustainability objectives.

Additionally, this investment is expected to support job creation, offer local supply chain opportunities, and contribute to the UK’s net zero ambitions by providing non-combustible, recyclable insulation solutions.

Community engagement and consultation

The Peddimore site, identified in Birmingham City Council’s Development Plan and granted outline planning permission for manufacturing use, currently has infrastructure in place, including a newly constructed access road and roundabout.

The area has been prepared to accommodate new industrial developments, with an adjacent facility established in 2023.

ROCKWOOL has scheduled consultations with the local community in the coming weeks to share information about the proposed facility.

The company plans to hold open house events where local residents can meet ROCKWOOL representatives and learn about the company’s initiatives, including its commitment to social and environmental contributions.

Additional details will be made available on ROCKWOOL’s website as the project progresses.

Long-term growth strategy in the UK

Nick Wilson, Managing Director of ROCKWOOL UK & Ireland, expressed optimism about the company’s expansion into the West Midlands.

Wilson stated: “We’re very excited at the opportunity to expand the business into the West Midlands that would enable us to boost our production capacity in the UK and to create quality jobs and business opportunities in the local community.”

Wilson highlighted that ROCKWOOL has been operating in South Wales for 45 years, where it has developed a solid foundation and continues to invest.

This new facility will enhance production capabilities in the UK, positioning ROCKWOOL to better serve customers in the Midlands, northern England, and Scotland.

Advantages of the West Midlands location

According to Wilson, the West Midlands offers several advantages for ROCKWOOL’s expansion, including a skilled local workforce, a manufacturing-friendly environment, and robust transport links.

“The West Midlands has a skilled, local workforce, a strong manufacturing tradition, and excellent transport links, so it is an ideal location for us to expand our business in the UK,” Wilson said, adding that the new facility will support improved customer service across the northern UK.

ROCKWOOL’s approach to community engagement includes commitments to being a responsible neighbour to the residents of Minworth and surrounding areas.

This facility represents a continuation of ROCKWOOL’s strategy to expand its manufacturing footprint while contributing to community development.
