AEI Cables stresses importance of safety
Specialist cable supplier AEI Cables has said that safety must remain the top priority for the electrical supply chain despite current economic challenges.
According to AEI Cables, fire performance cables play a key role in supporting safety-critical circuits in a wide range of UK buildings.
The company said that Category 3 fire performance cables can withstand exposure to flames and heat for up to 120 minutes, offering protection to equipment, buildings and people.
Stuart Dover, general manager of AEI Cables, said: “The electrical industry supply chains are facing challenging times with the economy but we should stress – these cables support critical safety circuits in tall buildings, office spaces, hospitals, shopping malls and stadia.
“There are a number of issues including the skills gap, the economy and lack of supply chain confidence but we should not lose sight of the paramount importance of safety for everyone concerned including those moving about in these buildings.”
Fire performance cable categories
AEI Cables reported that Category 1 fire performance cables are designed to resist flames for 30 minutes, making them suitable for emergency lighting.
The company stated that Category 2 cables withstand fire for 60 minutes and are typically installed for alarm systems.
It said that Category 3 cables extend fire resistance to 120 minutes and are required to maintain power for firefighting operations.
These specifications provide extended operational timeframes for different safety applications across UK buildings.
Use of category 3 cables in emergency systems
AEI Cables explained that Category 3 Control fire performance cables are specified for use in systems such as evacuation alarms for disabled people, emergency voice communications and voice alarm systems.
It said that these systems are critical in supporting both safe evacuation and firefighting response in a range of building types.
The company added that Category 3 cabling is designed to maintain function during prolonged fire exposure, ensuring critical systems remain operational when needed most.
Support for firefighting and evacuation
According to AEI Cables, systems supported by Category 3 cables include smoke and heat extraction equipment.
It noted that these installations assist fire services during firefighting operations.
The company also highlighted that the systems play a role in facilitating safe evacuation procedures during emergencies.
It stated that the cables also help reduce smoke, toxic gases and the spread of flames in real fire conditions.
Certification and standards
AEI Cables reported that its Firetec Enhanced cabling is certified by LPCB to BS8519 (Annex B) Category 3 Control, as well as Category 2 Control.
The company explained that BS8519 defines six categories of cable performance, covering survival times of 30, 60 or 120 minutes for both power and control cables.
It added that all its products carry approvals from independent certification bodies including BASEC and LPCB.
The supplier confirmed it also holds approvals from organisations such as Lloyds, the Ministry of Defence, Network Rail and London Underground.
It said that its products are designed and manufactured in compliance with international standards.
Relevance for fire and safety professionals
For fire safety engineers and professionals, AEI Cables’ emphasis on supply chain safety highlights the role of compliant fire performance cabling in ensuring operational resilience during emergencies.
The guidance reinforces the need for adherence to BS8519 and independent certification in critical building systems.
Professionals involved in design, specification and maintenance of safety systems can use this information to assess appropriate cabling for applications such as evacuation alarms and emergency communications.
It also demonstrates the link between cabling choices and operational support for fire services during real incidents.
