South Wales FRS: Report raises concerns over safety and operational procedures
A report by the Welsh Government’s Chief Fire and Rescue Advisor (CFRA) has raised concerns about the safety of firefighters and the public within the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
The report, as stated by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), highlights issues surrounding training and operational procedures, along with a series of recommendations for improvement.
As reported by the Fire Brigades Union, Ben Selby, assistant general secretary of the FBU, said: “This report raises a number of serious issues regarding the safety of firefighters and the public, as well as operational procedure.
It also discusses the introduction of practices which could be detrimental to improving these issues.”
Firefighters’ safety remains a priority for the union
The Fire Brigades Union has expressed concern about the findings and recommendations of the report, emphasising the importance of firefighter safety and working conditions.
Selby reiterated the union’s commitment to safeguarding firefighters, stating: “Firefighters are the experts on firefighting, and we will firmly defend their right to consultation and negotiation through their union on any issue that affects their safety or working conditions.”
The union plans to review the report’s findings in detail and work with the Welsh Government, fire authority, and fire service leadership to address the concerns raised.
Funding cuts impact fire service effectiveness
In response to the CFRA’s report, Gareth Tovey, the Fire Brigades Union Executive Council member for Wales, pointed to broader issues affecting the fire service across the UK.
He noted that since 2010, the fire service has lost one in five firefighter positions and has seen a 30% reduction in central government funding.
These cuts have impacted response times and the overall effectiveness of fire services.
Tovey said: “It is no wonder that response times across the UK are worse than ever.
“We need to see significant investment from the Westminster government, and the re-introduction of national standards to end the postcode lottery on fire cover.”
Call for investment and national standards
The Fire Brigades Union has called for increased investment in the fire service and the re-introduction of national standards to ensure equitable fire cover across different regions.
The union argues that without addressing these underlying funding issues, the fire service will struggle to meet the needs of communities, particularly in areas like South Wales.
Tovey emphasised: “Until we solve these underlying problems, the fire service will not have the resources it needs to deliver effectively for the communities of South Wales.”
