Fire Brigades Union calls for action from new Labour government

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called on the new Labour government to end years of what they describe as “misery” under Conservative rule and to fulfil their promises to working people following the party’s win in the general election.

As reported by the Fire Brigades Union, FBU general secretary Matt Wrack stated: “Today marks the end of an era of destruction and misery under Tory rule.

“For the past fourteen years, we have endured endless attacks on our public services, pay, rights and freedoms.”

Wrack further emphasised the need for significant changes: “Keir Starmer has inherited a broken Britain, with millions struggling to pay the bills.

“To fix it, the new Labour government must turn its back on austerity and authoritarianism.”

Focus on reversing anti trade union laws

Wrack called for the new government to reverse anti trade union laws implemented by the previous government.

He stated: “Trade unions will be holding all new ministers to every commitment made in the New Deal for Working People.

£To improve people’s lives, we need to shift the balance of power away from profiteers and back to workers.”

He added: “This must start with reversing the Tory’s vicious anti trade union laws.”

The FBU is urging immediate action to address these concerns, highlighting the need for policy changes that support workers’ rights and public services.

Environmental health concerns raised by CIEH

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has also expressed its expectations from the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs).

The organisation has engaged with parliamentary candidates through a pledge campaign focused on environmental health issues, with 11 pledge signatories elected to Parliament.

CIEH President Mark Elliott said: “We are delighted to see a new cohort of MPs, many of whom have shown a clear commitment to engaging with CIEH and to promoting environmental health in Parliament.”

Elliott highlighted the organisation’s priorities, including engaging with MPs on environmental health policies, raising awareness, and promoting the establishment of an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Environmental Health.

Next steps for environmental health advocacy

CIEH plans to distribute a parliamentary briefing to all newly elected MPs, aiming to increase understanding of environmental health issues.

They will also conduct targeted outreach to Ministers once the new government is formed.

CIEH aims to foster robust policies that protect public health and the environment, advocating for the creation of an APPG dedicated to these issues.

They will closely monitor the King’s Speech on 17th July for legislative developments and ensure these align with their vision and mission.

Elliott emphasized the importance of collaboration with policymakers: “This election marks a significant opportunity for us to strengthen our advocacy efforts and work collaboratively with policymakers to achieve meaningful progress.

“Together, we can ensure that environmental health remains a top priority in the new Parliament.”
