ASFP introduces modular certification in the UK fire sector

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has announced updates to its Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection.

According to ASFP, the updated qualification is now assessed entirely through an online multiple-choice exam format.

Candidates must pass four unit exams to obtain the full Level 2 Certificate.

Modular exams introduced for passive fire learners

ASFP stated that each of the four exams focuses on a distinct subject area within passive fire protection.

The four units cover: structural frame of the building; fire-resisting walls, floors, ceilings and glazing; fire stopping including cavity barriers and the building envelope; and fire doors and shutters.

The organisation added that candidates may also take individual unit exams to achieve a Level 2 Award Qualification in one specific area, rather than the full certificate.

This format is designed to meet demand for more targeted training options.

Flexibility and accessibility prioritised in new exam format

The updated qualification has been designed to allow learners to participate remotely, regardless of location.

ASFP explained that this shift to an entirely online multiple-choice assessment aims to improve access and convenience for those working in the fire protection industry.

It noted that the new structure enables professionals to gain recognition in individual specialisms or pursue full certification as suits their needs.

The organisation said this flexibility may benefit both individuals and employers aiming to align skills with operational requirements.

Professional development aligned with industry needs

ASFP said the modular structure was created in response to requests from industry professionals for more relevant and accessible learning routes.

It stated that these changes are intended to support professional development and help ensure that those working in passive fire protection have access to current technical knowledge.

The qualification aligns with evolving best practices across the sector, according to ASFP.

The organisation encouraged those interested to visit its website for further information on registration and assessment details.
