Wildfire safety report details travel risks worldwide

Safeture AB has reported that a new joint publication with Riskline has outlined the increased global travel risks caused by wildfires.

The ‘Wildfire Informer 2025’ provides practical safety guidance for travellers and highlights regions expected to face wildfire threats throughout the year.

The report said the United States experienced the most wildfires in 2024, followed by Chile, Australia, Canada and Greece.

It also noted that the UK experienced record-breaking wildfires in early 2025, affecting over 30,000 hectares.

Marcel Brandt, Chief Sales Officer at Safeture, said: “As wildfire seasons expand across every continent, so too must our awareness.”

Report outlines most affected regions in 2024

According to the report, the United States recorded the highest number of wildfires in 2024.

Chile and Australia were also among the most affected, followed by Canada and Greece.

The report said Greece is preparing for a ‘worrying’ 2025 season, with over 18,000 firefighters and 3,700 vehicles deployed in anticipation.

It noted that even in Northern Europe, fire activity has increased.

In the UK, over 30,000 hectares were burned in early 2025, a figure which surpassed previous records.

Travel disruption caused by wildfire events

The report stated that wildfires are affecting travel in multiple ways, even when fires are not immediately nearby.

These include cancelled flights, closed roads, widespread evacuations and air quality warnings triggered by distant fires.

The impact is not limited to rural or forested areas.

The report said cities and major destinations have also faced disruption due to smoke and emergency conditions.

The growing scale and unpredictability of wildfire seasons were cited as a key factor for increased travel risks.

Practical guidance for travellers

Safeture and Riskline’s report includes recommendations for travellers planning to visit areas at risk.

Advice includes checking official alerts, such as those issued by the European Forest Fire Information System.

The report recommends carrying emergency plans and monitoring local news in real-time.

Travellers were also advised to consider insurance policies that cover natural disaster-related disruption.

Brandt said: “Travel today requires more than a packed suitcase and passport. It demands preparation, flexibility, and a clear understanding of potential risks.”
