Abu Dhabi enhances fire safety standards with new field survey

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has initiated a comprehensive ‘Field Survey’ campaign to assess and improve fire safety standards in various buildings, establishments, and shops across the city.

This initiative, launched with the objective of elevating prevention, safety, and security standards, is a pivotal step in mitigating fire hazards and preventing serious accidents.

Ensuring compliance and safety in buildings

Colonel Salem Abdullah Al Dhaheri, Acting Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, emphasised the importance of this initiative in enhancing community protection.

The survey involves random inspections across multiple locations, including residences, commercial buildings, residential towers, economic establishments, and industrial areas.

These inspections focus on evaluating the presence of essential fire safety elements such as fire detectors, alarm devices, and maintenance contracts with approved companies.

Collaboration and standard enhancement

Colonel Al Dhaheri highlighted the critical role of cooperation and teamwork among building owners, the Authority, and strategic partners in the success of the Field Survey initiative.

This collaborative effort is aimed at elevating safety standards and reducing fire-related risks, contributing significantly to the sustainability and safety perception in Abu Dhabi.

Mandatory safety measures and systems

As per the Civil Defence guidelines, residential house owners are required to install fire detection devices and subscribe to the Civil Defence eSystem.

This mandate extends to all existing and future residences, with a three-year window granted for compliance.

The resolution also mandates that construction licence-issuing government departments ensure the installation of fire detectors and subscription to the eSystem before granting completion certificates.

These measures are part of the UAE’s commitment to becoming one of the safest countries globally, reducing fire incidents and related fatalities.

Abu Dhabi Civil Defence’s Comprehensive fire safety protocols

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority outlines several key fire safety protocols, including:

  • Emergency evacuation routes.
  • Fire safety exit signs and fire alarms.
  • Regular preventative inspections and maintenance.
  • Training staff on prevention and safety measures.
  • Partnering with a full-service fire safety company for preventative measures.

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority’s Field Survey initiative is a commendable effort in enhancing fire safety and prevention measures across the city.

This proactive approach, focusing on compliance, collaboration, and mandatory safety measures, reflects a significant stride towards safeguarding lives and properties against fire hazards.

The mandatory installation of fire detecting devices and the involvement of various stakeholders, including building owners and government entities, underline a holistic strategy in fire safety management.

Such initiatives not only improve safety standards but also contribute to the broader goal of making cities safer and more resilient against fire incidents.
