Fire and rescue personnel receive New Year Honours

The New Year Honours List has recognised several individuals from fire and rescue services across the United Kingdom for their exceptional service and leadership.
This prestigious list, welcomed by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), includes honours such as the Order of the British Empire (OBE), British Empire Medal (BEM), and the King’s Fire Service Medal (KFSM).
Notable Honours
OBE and BEM Recipients
Among the distinguished recipients, Philip John Loach, lately Chief Fire Officer of West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service (FRS), was honoured with an OBE for his contributions.
The British Empire Medal (BEM) was awarded to various personnel, including Janet Shirley Dyer, Catering Manager at the National Fire Service College, and Euros Hefin Edwards, Watch Manager at Mid & West Wales FRS, acknowledging their significant community service.
King’s Fire Service Medal Awardees
The King’s Fire Service Medal (KFSM) recipients include Samuel Benjamin Allison, Station Manager at Dorset & Wiltshire FRS, and Phillip Garrigan, Chief Fire Officer at Merseyside FRS.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) celebrated two of its staff, Watch Commander David Gibson and Iain Morris, Head of Asset Management, for their combined 65 years of service.

David Gibson, based at Penicuik Community Fire Station, has dedicated over 44 years to community protection.
His dual role as a mental health nurse has enriched his contributions as a Wellbeing Champion for SFRS.
Iain Morris, overseeing SFRS’s assets, has been pivotal in driving improvements and managing the challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Recognition from Fire and Emergency New Zealand
In New Zealand, five firefighters and support personnel received King’s Service Medals.
Rebecca Keoghan, Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board Chair, praised the dedication of these individuals, including Neville Carter for his extensive service to the Southbridge Volunteer Fire Brigade and rugby.
London Fire Brigade Commissioner Honoured
Commissioner Andy Roe of the London Fire Brigade was awarded the King’s Fire Service Medal.
His 22-year tenure and leadership during challenging periods, including post-Grenfell Tower Fire transformations, have been instrumental in the Brigade’s progress.
