MSA Safety, a leading provider of critical safety equipment, has secured a significant $35 million contract with the US Air Force.

This deal is set to provide advanced respiratory protective gear for fire brigades at air bases globally, marking a crucial development in safety and protective equipment for fire service personnel.

Comprehensive safety solutions for air base fire brigades

As part of the contract, MSA Safety will deliver their innovative G1 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), along with associated facepieces, chemical warfare component (CWC) masks, and supplied-air respirator (SAR) kits.

This equipment will replace older models of MSA air masks, enhancing the safety gear of US Air Force fire brigades stationed worldwide.

Innovative features of the G1 SCBA

The G1 SCBA platform is a testament to MSA Safety’s commitment to advancing firefighter safety.

It features over 15 patents and includes several innovative aspects.

Notably, it has removed electronic components from the facepiece, includes a “Central Power” design powered by a single rechargeable battery, and features “buddy lights” for visibility in smoke and darkness.

The apparatus also has improved voice amplification communications and is designed for comfort, with an ergonomic design, adjustable waist belt, and wide shoulder straps for even weight distribution.

Production and delivery timeline

The production of these vital safety apparatuses began in the fall at MSA Safety’s Murrysville, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility.

The company anticipates that deliveries will continue through the end of this year and extend into 2024, ensuring timely equipment provision to the Air Force’s fire brigades.
