Enhanced methane detection with IR technology

Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection has introduced a new infrared (IR) sensor for methane detection, catering to the increasing demand for advanced measurement capabilities in industrial, utility, and laboratory sectors.

The move comes as industries seek to improve detection stability and respond to the trend towards lower alarm thresholds for enhanced safety.

The new IR sensor, designed for integration with the company’s OLCT 100 XPIR fixed gas detector, offers a robust and economical solution for methane monitoring, surpassing traditional catalytic oxidation methods in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO).

This innovation is set to provide significant benefits in environments where methane is present, offering superior performance without the need for frequent sensor replacement and calibration.

The IR sensor not only ensures measurement stability but is also resistant to catalytic poisons, promising a long service life even in the presence of background gases for accurate 100% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) methane detection.

The technology behind IR methane sensors

The operation of IR methane sensors involves the use of two wavelengths of IR energy: one to detect gas absorption and another as a reference to offset the effects of temperature and humidity changes.

This technology allows the sensors to operate effectively in environments with 0-100% by volume methane gas, without the need for oxygen.

The OLCT 100 XPIR detector, approved by ATEX for use in explosive atmospheres, has proven its effectiveness in detecting refrigerant, CO2, and combustible gases.

It features a 4-20mA output, guaranteeing safe and dependable operation across various applications.

A commitment to safety and innovation

Régis Prévost, Product Line Manager at Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection, emphasized the benefits of the new sensor: “Our new OLCT 100 XPIR with IR methane sensor ensures the protection of workers, assets, and the environment from the potentially damaging and harmful effects of methane.

“Our expert design and development team is constantly looking at ways to meet the demands of customers, helping them overcome real market challenges.

“With this new product, they now have access to a stable, reliable, and cost-effective way of performing methane detection measurements.”

Furthermore, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection has made this advanced IR sensor technology available in its 700 series of fixed gas detectors.

These sophisticated devices feature an integrated alphanumeric LED screen, displaying sensor status information to enhance user awareness and safety.

IFSJ comment
