West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service unveils state-of-the-art training centre and Horsham Fire Station

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has officially launched its cutting-edge training facility and Horsham Fire Station, named Platinum House.

This landmark development, which commenced in November 2021, marks a significant enhancement in firefighting and safety training capabilities for the region.

Innovative features and advanced training at Platinum House

Platinum House is a multifaceted facility, integrating a modern training centre with a fully operational fire station.

It features a variety of training environments, such as a live fire training facility, a cold smoke training tower, an immersive incident command suite, and a road traffic collision training area.

These facilities are designed to provide firefighters with realistic operational scenarios, ensuring they are well-prepared for a range of emergency situations.

The site also includes appliance bays, office space, training rooms, staff bedrooms, and a community space, staffed round the clock by wholetime and retained firefighters.

Emphasising sustainability and environmental responsibility

Sustainability is a key focus of Platinum House, aligning with West Sussex County Council’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

The facility utilises advanced technology and renewable energy sources, featuring solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and air source heat pumps for heating.

Strategic access and safety considerations

Platinum House offers two exit routes for responding to emergencies.

Northbound responses utilise Macfarlane Way, while southbound responses have a dedicated slipway onto the A24 southbound junction.

Both exits are equipped with wig-wags, a signalling device, to ensure the safe and swift departure of fire engines.

The proper use of these signalling devices is crucial for the safety of both the firefighters and the public.

Official opening and commitment to the community

Platinum House was officially inaugurated by Lady Emma Barnard, His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, on 28th November 2023.

This opening marks a new era for the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, reflecting a commitment to equip firefighters with essential skills and to serve the community effectively.

The Chairman of West Sussex County Council, Pete Bradbury, highlighted the significance of the facility, not just in physical terms but as a vision for the future of the service.

Chief Fire Officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton expressed gratitude for the support received in realising this vision.

The facility is named in memory of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and pays tribute to her extensive public service.

It aims to enhance the safety and skills of firefighters, benefiting not just Horsham but the entire West Sussex community.

Collaboration and road safety awareness

The project involved close collaboration between the West Sussex County Council’s Highways department and the Fire & Rescue Service.

This partnership extends to road safety, with a focus on educating the public about the new signalling devices installed at the site.

Matt Davey, Assistant Director of Highways, Transport and Planning, emphasised the importance of driver vigilance and compliance with the new road signals to ensure the safety of both firefighters and the public.

IFSJ Comment

The launch of Platinum House represents a significant milestone in the evolution of fire and rescue services in West Sussex.

This state-of-the-art facility not only advances the training and preparedness of firefighters but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and community safety.

The integration of modern training environments, the emphasis on renewable energy, and the strategic road safety measures reflect a holistic approach to emergency services.

Platinum House is more than just a physical space; it symbolises a forward-thinking ethos and a dedication to excellence in public service.

As we move towards a future where challenges in fire safety and emergency response are ever-evolving, facilities like Platinum House are essential in ensuring that our firefighters are equipped with the best tools and training to protect and serve our communities.
